jmoore4294 Posted December 25, 2007 Report Posted December 25, 2007 I've read many posts on this forum talking about how big of a piece of junk their w-body is, or how much of a PITA it is to repair. And I somewhat agree with that as I have had my fair share of problems with my 95 CS. But there is one thing that always amazed me, and some of you might just think I'm weird or something, but whether my car is running on 4 or 5 cylinders, or I have a flat and I'm running on a spare....it always manages to get me home before it leaves me stranded. And even though they are expensive cars to repair, especially the LQ1, I figure I'll keep mine for a good long while. Quote
ManicMechanic Posted December 25, 2007 Report Posted December 25, 2007 DAMN STRAIGHT! My '92 has NEVER left me stranded... My '94 will be my first LQ1, it has left the previous owner stranded once when the serpentine belt broke - I make it a point to carry an extra with the spare tire - but that is IT... Quote
rockfangd Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 very true, even when my front bearing went and was flopping around i still got home, and when my rear subframe rotted and my trailing arms were hanging i still got home. lol. Tis true Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 Only time my car failed me was when the battery died. But it was at home so I got lucky! I cannot complain about these cars at all. Although I do think people like to exaggurate some things. Quote
xtremerevolution Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 Guess I've been lucky. My car has only broken down on me once to where it was bad enough not to start on me, and that's because of the stupid ignition key security system. Then again, while it is slower, the L27 is a lot more reliable. :-) I love my w-body. Quote
rockfangd Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 lol i exagerate nothing. although i agree some people go nuts Quote
ns87 Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 I agree with everyone here. - I drove 120 mile trip with a fuel pump that had been dying for at least 500 miles before that. It stalled a couple times, but that's all. - I drove with a dead coil pack (twice). Once during a 300 mile trip A GM car can run poorly longer than other cars can run properly<--More or less the quote! Quote
wildbill Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 My 92 Euro quit on me once. But right in front of a repair shop. I would have rather done the work myself, but at least it wasn't on the highway in the middle of nowhere. ...those damn CPS.... Quote
Monkton Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 The Cutlass always got me home. Whether it was pretty or not it did the job... sometimes easier than other times lol But I can't talk it was a Quad4 after all Quote
cutlassdude96 Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 my car only died on me once, when the fuel pump died and had to be towed home Quote
Euro Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 Damn straight! My Lumina lasted me over 4 years and never left me stranded....then left me stranded twice in 1 month...lol My GP's been great to me too! Quote
1990lumina Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 My Lumina has stranded me 4 times in 3 years. Wasn't anything horrible like in the middle of bumfuck or anything but still...my sister beat on '95 Taurus always starts and goes..it has NEVER stranded anyone since we've owned it. As for the other vehicles in my family, just the Suburban - another GM stranded my dad on the freeway...new motor fixed that problem lol Quote
Rdrckt_92 Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 my GP has left me stranded a couple of times, but it really isnt the cars fault, if the previous owners would have kept up on the maintanence it never would have happened. Never changing the fuel filter and spark plugs in over 120,000miles is bad, and people should be smacked... Quote
Euro Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 Yeah the Lumina's FPR took a shit when I was doing 80mph on the interstate. That was fun, trying to pull it off doing 80 then BAM, no power brakes, steering, power...anything. I was also 2 hours from home. Luckily I died literally 100 yards from a service station though. In the middle of boo-foo fucking nowhere... Quote
mfewtrail Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 You guys that haven't been stranded or let down by your car yet just haven't driven them enough. Out of 255,000 miles, my '93 has only left me stranded once. I wasn't really "stranded" though as the fuel pump died in the parking lot of my brother's apartment. I towed the car home a day or two later and swapped out the pump. Other than that, the ignition control module crapped out while my car was idling in my own driveway. Quote
ns87 Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 you're the original owner mfewtrail? Quote
joey b Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 broken belt tensioner= stranded ICM failure = stranded Engine go boom = stranded 3.1 alternator death = stranded not too bad over a course of 9 years, and about 200K miles. Quote
ManicMechanic Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 you're the original owner mfewtrail? He would have been 8 when he bought the car... Quote
mfewtrail Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 you're the original owner mfewtrail? My mother purchased the car new in 1993, I got it when I started driving. Quote
IRONDOG442 Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 Intrigues dont die they just get cooler !!! And use more oil !!! Quote
89SupremeCutty Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 my cutty never left me stranded, even when i just filled up the tank and the engine decided to jump time. i managed to get it running enough to drive 6 miles not being able to go past 40mph to get home. my parents got me AAA just before thanksgiving, but i know i'll never use it cause my W will always get me home! Quote
88Regal Limited Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 The only times my lil 2.8 regal left me stranded was when the block split in 2 and coolant was getting into the oil, and when the tranny fluid leaked out and it wouldn't move. 2 quarts and it was back on the road in 15min! Quote
Schurkey Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 Bought a '92 Euro 3.4 in November '92. Stranded me one time when the second alternator died suddenly at something like 100,000 miles. (but only about 20,000 on the alternator) Bought a '93 Euro 3.4 two or three years ago. Nearly stranded me one time when the fuel pump died near Reno--I limped to my Dad's place in Stockton (about 150 miles) but it took 7 or 8 hateful hours. It had 113,000 (or more) on it at the time, and it most surely had not received proper maintenance or care before I bought it. Alternators are a problem, at least on the early-to-mid '90's cars. Front brake rotor warpage is a problem. The stupid O-ring on the oil pump drive shaft assembly is a problem. Brake boosters seem to be a problem. GM had NO BUSINESS slapping a junky 4-popper in that chassis. WHAT A DOG!!! Beyond that--I'm so stinkin' thrilled with those W bodies that it's hard to drive by one on a car lot and not be tempted to take it home... Quote
GPX Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 Other than the time the connecting rod went thru the block and completely killed the motor (allowing me the excuse to install the 3400) and when the old alt died (at home), it's been extremely reliable, and I still love it, love it, love it! Quote
GP1138 Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 My new car left me on 75N with a grenaded alt and shredded serp. belt. One statie ride and VatoZone transaction and roadside alt change (without a 3/8" ratchet no less!) and we were on our way. Quote
