stockgp
so i'm going to redo the valvetrain. i'm thinking 1.6 rockers, new lifters and new pushrods. anything else i should do while i'm in there? i don't plan on taking the heads off, so i don't want ot do valves or springs. has anyone had any experience with advance or auto zone lifters, pushrods, etc? oh, with 1.6 rockers do i need longer pushrods? any input is welcome
Robby1870
You could do valve springs with the heads on, it just would be a little more of a pain in the ass. Since this is a 3.1L, you should be okay with stock push rods and 1.6s. Technically you should get custom length, but I believe others have gotten by with stock push rods (I think Brian P used stock push rods with his old 3.2L). Just make sure the push rods don't rub in the center of "U" shape on the push rod guide plates. The guide plates are designed so that the push rod should hit the sides of the "U". If the push rod does rub the center of the "U", you'll likely break a guide plate. You can just remove a little material in the center of the "U" to clearance the push rod. I used advanced auto lifters when I had to replace two on my sister's 95 Monte. That was like 3 years ago, no problems since.
19Cutlass94
Id go to NAPA and buy the Clevite engine parts.
mfewtrail
Are you going with the factory 94-95 1.6 ratio rocker arms from a 3100? If so, make sure to get the guide plates from the car that those 1.6's are in.
GutlessSupreme
I had no problems using stock 3.1 pushrods with the 3100 stamped 1.6 rockers.. I don't have the newer guide plates.. but I haven't had any car running long enough with them to know if I'd have any problems either way lol. I got my new pushrods from NAPA, they were Clevites but only came 8 or 10 to a box or something like that.. so I had a couple extra of each lol. Lifters were new Melling units I found on ebay, good stuff.

mfewtrail
After a 1.6 stamped rocker arm swap, the pushrods will rub the stock guides. I found this out first hand after not inspecting the pushrods closely for rubbing/binding on my initial installation. I put ~500 miles on my car with the stock guides before swapping to the 3100 guides. I can take pictures of where the stock guide plates rub if you're interested. I'll probably end up just grinding mine down.

Yeah, I got about ~500 out of mine before I snapped a guide plate too. This was with 1.6 roller tips from Comp Cams.

GOT2B GM
I put 1.6/1 rocker arms in my TGP, and I grabbed the pushrod guides and the rocker arms at the same time from the 95 Lumina 3100 at the j/y.

mfewtrail
Updating this: I snapped a few pictures, but need to find my usb cable that goes to my camera. Basically the pushrods will lightly bottom out and rub the sides about midway up on most of the guide plates. At least, that's what they did on my car. In the meantime, here's a picture from the 60*V6 board showing how much someone grinded down the stock guide plates for use with 1.6 rocker arms. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/3400GT/Rockers/rockersd.jpg
