Dark Ride Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Alright, been driving the Lumina around town. And have been noticing this horrible knocking sound when I come to stop, take off, or go over a bump at a slow speed(like 5-15 MPH). It almost gives me the impression of the strut knuckle rocking back and forth, but I could be wrong. The nuts on the top are snug, but I haven't looked more in detail than that. Thanks, Mitch Edit: this is only on the driver's side Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Jack the drivers side up and try moving the wheel. More than likely its going to be a ball joint, but could also be a wheel bearing. But jack it up and try moving the wheel at 12 and 6 and 9 and 3. Quote
rockfangd Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 bad balljoint. control arm bushing, doubt it though Quote
Andrew Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 i would think its the strut mount before the balljoint, but eh, could be either. Quote
Chancho Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 Im leaning towards the ball joint being bad, did you try to jack the car up and see if you got any play Quote
Dark Ride Posted December 16, 2007 Author Report Posted December 16, 2007 I don't have a jack at the moment, but this weekend i will be able to. Quote
Dark Ride Posted January 10, 2008 Author Report Posted January 10, 2008 finally checked it, and the wheel doesn't move at all at 6 and 12 or 9 and 3 balljoint is snug on both sides. Control arm bushings seem snug as well. Quote
SigEpCutlass Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 If the balljoint is ok I'd take the strut plate cover off and take a look at the strut mount. Replacing a front strut mount is a cake walk. Quote
Chancho Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Replacing a front strut mount is a cake walk. so long as you didnt put any monroe or other low quality struts in there and the top hex hole that allows the rod to be gripped isnt stripped out then its a walk through hell Quote

slick Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Check to make sure your caliper didn't come undone from the caliper bracket. Quote
mfewtrail Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 The nut that holds the strut cartridge in could be loose(the one you need the W-body strut tool to tighten or loosen). I've seen this happen before on a few w-bodies after they had replacements installed. The struts on them would make some nice clunking noises going over bumps. Also, you could push real hard on the top of the tire w/ the car parked and hear + feel the strut cartridge moving around if you placed your hand on the strut/spring area. Quote
Dark Ride Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 Brake Caliper bracket is snug, Brake caliper has a little bit of play, but my understanding is thats the way is supposed to be. I haven't checked the strut mount yet its been too cold, but today I was accelerating and it made a horrible sound that almost sounded like something snapping and my Anti-lock Light is permanently light up now. rockfangd Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 wow i have seen a few w-s with the cartridges replaced that loosened and it wasnt pretty so when i did mine i did everything at one time off the car Quote
