sunny_8
I had the car running most of the day, parked in on the street, went in came out, dont start. This happened to me before, looked for the OBDII plug thing, and its gone, cannot find it in the car either. Its the key thing that goes in the OBD port, black plastic key.....guess it jumpers the right ports to make the car start . Anyone know what I can do ? What ports to jump ? I am thinking paper clip, but Dont know what ports to jumper. Thanks, - BTW - its cold as hell in chicago, and I need my car to go to work tomrrow...... thanks,
sunny_8
So I have to confess - I dont know what kind of OBD thing I have ? 1, 1.5 or 2 ? It has a single line of connecter ports, about 5 or 6 of them. Anyone who helps, is a life saver !!!!!!
1990lumina
If it's a '95 you have OBD 1.5 - I believe you have an OBD II connector though. The paper clip method will NOT work on OBD 1.5 or OBD II
sunny_8
Puck me, that means without a the flipping key thing, I cannot start my car ? I dont need to read codes or anything, just need to get the blasted thing started.............ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
GP1138
... What? Is this like an immobilizer or a silencer type thing or something??
sunny_8
All I know is that the lame GM design they have. Imagine a plug or a key that fits the ODB female side thats in the car. This "plug/Key" is needed for the car to turn over, if its not in there then it does not turn, so car does not start. The car has all the power etc...just that this plug thing jumpers ports to make the car start....I dont know what ports....it jumpers, I know the key had metel at all 5 ports, but its sealed so I dont know what port was jumpered to what..... Hope this helps a bit.. thx
ManicMechanic
I'm thinking someone has bypassed the VATS system.
sunny_8
So what you are saying is that with this Key in place the VATS system is bypassed ? Not sure if that makes sense as the key came with the car........
Crazy K
my 92 lumina had something similiar... it was probably the same type thing. and there was no key in the car for it to operate it... it only worked because the wires had melted into each other! mine snipped and diverted the thick yellow starter wires. If it is the same device.... you need to remove the the lower dash cover and see whats going on down there. you could probably hook up the wires the way they should have been and be ok. nothing to do with vats yall! cutty
sounds like a alarm thing, that disables everything until the little key is put in the special connector.
sunny_8
Thanks all, Here is what I just did, 1. Used a old OBD Key I got from AutoZone, just a nice looking paper clip. 2. Put it in the OBD all the way to the right, hopefully hitting port 4 and 5. 3. Started the car - AND IT WORKED!!!!! What I am not sure of : If I just put the key on any other port, will it damage anything ? I basically want to see if I can just touch any 2 ports, or does it have to be port 4 &5 ? To fix this forever, what do I need to do with the yellow wire ? What does it have to touch etc.... For now I can go to work, partially hotwiring the thing....just need to know if I need to spend the money on a key from the dealer or not...... Here is what Info I found : 5-pin ALDL connector pinout: A B C D E 12-pin ALDL connector pinout: F E D C B A G H J K L M - Bus positive Line of SAE-J1850 - A - Chassis ground - C Signal ground - D CAN high (ISO 15765-4 and SAE-J2234) - E K line of ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4 - - Bus negative Line of SAE-J1850 - - - CAN low (ISO 15765-4 and SAE-J2234) L line of ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4 Battery voltage So I just jumpered the 4th and 5th line - thanks,
