Where does the factory exhaust split?

On the cars with stock duals (Z34 and Gran Prix, etc) theres only one exhaust pipe that splits into two pipes right? I don't have access to a factory dual car and I was wondering where the split is located. If anyone could tell me that would be great, pics would be awesome too, but I have a pretty good imagination. I just need ideas because I want to put a split in my exhaust and have duals and I'm not sure where to put it. Sorry to post another thread on this but iI didn't want to hijack any other threads. Thanks :D .

The split is right after the curl to center passed the rear mono-leaf.

Hang on... I can dig up some old Cutlass pictures.

EDIT: Man, I can't beleive I still have these...

Y-Pipe: shot from the rear of the car

Driver Muffler: just showing where it sits / position

Driver Muffler Hanger: showing where it bolted in (stock on my vehicle)

Hope this sort-off helps out.

If you do the split at a muffler shop, they have year specific diagram on routing and piece / pipe needed to create.

I know they did this style on a few years, but when the numerous muffler shops had my car up on the hoist wondering about duals the whole Y-pipe wouldn't fit onto my car and not hang down like a amateur job. One shop even ordered a pipe from a 94 cutlass(I think) and well it didn't fit. Well I went to another shop and what they did was run one pipe all the way like the single exhaust was run. And then put on a new muffler and ran a crossover pipe from the passenger side muffler to the drivers side muffler. The guy also showed me a pic in the book and it said it was from a GP. and that is how they came from the factory? So it could be this way? either way it works and looks pretty good. it would look even better if you have the dual cutouts!!

Thanks a lot guys, those replies really helped, and Redfox, that first pic nailed it, thanks again :D

Glad to be of service.

Hope you get your exhaust looking great! :D
