01GPGT
ok...ive never had this happen in any other car ive owned...and this has only happened twice randomly...but i'll start it up, and then when i go to shift it into reverse or drive, the shifter is really stiff...thats all i can really say...i dont know if its the cold, or what, but it will be stiff when i first start going, but then, after a few minutes of driving, its fine....like i said, it could be the temperature, but its been cold here all week, and its only happened last friday night and tonight...anyone have this happen, or know what it might be? RangeStang
I also had a 96 corsica that did the same thing I always thought it was the cold.
19Cutlass94
What do you mean by stiff? More than likely its because the fluid is cold. Let it idle for a couple minutes before you drive off.
1990lumina
I think he means the floor shifter is harder to move sometimes.
01GPGT
yea, the floor shifter gets hard to move
Crazy K
is it jambed? as if the apply brake to release solenoid is stuck? or just hard to budge? the 94 is hard to budge sometimes.... and sometimes.... I go all the way from P to 1 with no resistance whatsoever! fortunately this has not happened in a long time....
HillmanZ24
Your shift cable might be bad. Try to check if the cable has any damage to it that could let water in it or ice to form onit.
01GPGT
i'll have to check that...its going into the dealer next week to have a whining sound checked out too...and its not the steering fluid, thats full

RangeStang
i'll have to check that...its going into the dealer next week to have a whining sound checked out too...and its not the steering fluid, thats full Could be a bad pump that would be my guess. Let us know what they say about the noise and the shifter though.
rockfangd
chances are the whining is a bad PS pump. mine was always full and always noisy., But i suppose it could be a bad alternator also
19Cutlass94
Having the PS fluid too full will make it whine like that too as Ive found out.
01GPGT
i hope its not the alternator...its only got 23,000 miles....altho i have heard that a bad alternator does whine... and when i left work tonight, the shifter was stiff again, but then seemed to get better by the time i got home...i'll keep everyone posted
RangeStang
I think a failing alt. could also be what is causing the stiff gear selector because art those cars shifter electronically controlled? That would explain both problems.
01GPGT
crap. well, if the alternator is whining, would it just whine during acceleration or would it be whining the whole time the car is on...b/c it only whines during acceleration, which my 01 grand prix used to do, and my sisters impala does sometimes...i popped the hodd, and when it idles, there is no whine either, so idk.... RangeStang
It would get more notable as rpm increased. Take it to oreillys or like autozone or something and get it tested.

01GPGT
o boy.... well, apparently the whining sound during moderate acceleration, is "normal"...and i guess they couldnt duplicate the sticky shifter, so the tech just greased the shifting linkage...idk if i should be happy its "ok" or be pissed that its still going to make noise and not wanna shift... RangeStang
He is just telling you that so you will get out of his hair. We used to do that kind of stuff at ford because warranty work pay sucks!
01GPGT
ughh...idk even know what to say....i guess i'll take it over to advance auto at some point and have them check the alternator
ron350
Moving the shifter on my 96 used to get stiff during cold weather. The best I can remember I lubed the shift cable with TAL 5 and the problem went away.
01GPGT
since it's too snowy and cold to change the oil in the yard myself, i had my mechanic do it...i had him check it, and it IS the alternator...so I called the dealer to let them know, and its going over tomorrow morning i just wanted to thank everyone for their help!!
