Bonk in the back...

So my car sits low. Like, dropped 2" low in the rear. I love it.

Its been fine, but for the past several months, every time I go over any immediate bump (like just a small one, but high enough for you to feel it), I hear a clanking bonk noise in the back of the car.

The other day I had two people in the back seats, each weighing around 170lbs. The car lowed a bit but not extremely. Every time I ran over a large bump like a railroad track, I'd hear a loud bump in the back yet again.

I'm not sure what it is. At first I thought something was loose inside the trunk or in the spare tire bay, but I'm starting to doubt that's it. If I stand inside the trunk and start jumping to flex the rear springs, it doesn't make any sound at all, but if I go over a high bump where the wheels would have to absorb a quick shock, it will make that noise yet again.

I can't figure out for the life of me what the heck is wrong.

On another side note, I stuck my hand on the shock when the two people were in the back of my car and it seemed almost as though my rear shock had completely bottomed out and was sitting on some kind of thick rubber spongy thing.

It's mostly coming from the rear right, but I can also hear it from the rear left.

Its driving me insane. If I'm on the freeway and I go over a large bump and the rear suspension flexes completely, there's no noise, but if I go over a small raised bump that would jolt your car (like a pothole), it will make a pretty loud rear noise.

Any ideas on what it could be?

rear struts shot thats my guess hard to diagnoss suspensions online though

That's what my guess was...

I'm planning on getting a pair of KYB GR2's for the rear like I have on the front.

you may be missing the foam bumpers that go over the strut shaft. I'm missing those and when I go over a large bump it makes a loud f'n noise that really annoys me. Can you buy just those foam bumpers?

I've got those on there. I didn't take them off when I last changed my shocks. Its gotta be something else.

It's the shocks and the mounts that are bad. Replace both when you do them. Your getting the clunking noise from the bad mounts.

x2!! If it makes a loud metallic BANG going over bumps, your mounts are on the way out very quickly, and before you know it your wheel will be sitting on it's corner and you'll be fucked. Replace the struts and mounts. Get KYB GR2's. I have them on my GP and they're phenominal.

Alright, I'll definitely do that this week then. And yeah, I've never replaced my shock mounts and I'm sitting at 164,000 miles now. I'll be ordering the KYB GR2's off of rockauto.com since they seem to be cheapest there. I had a feeling it had something to do with the shocks, just wasn't 100% sure what.

Thanks for the solution guys.

 Ive got the same sound in the ass end of my car! But I think its because I have the hangers too tight for the sway bar so the bushings cannot do their job, therefore I get bad noises.

Also, while you have the rear struts out, check the monoleaf pucks. If they are questionable, it would be a good time to replace them.
