so tonight i was leaving and turned on to the highway started going and pop nothing i rolled off the road and car woulndt start turns over fine but feels like i have no spark plugs in. im about 95% sure my timing belt is gone and thats what the tow truck guy said. my z34 has 192,000 miles on it so im guessing not worth fixing and how much does it cost normally for that job?

thanks

I did mine for somewhere in the neighborhood of 200$, took the better part of the weekend (going into it completely unknowledgeable about it). I just used the factory timing marks, so I didn't actually time it, and that's actually a lot easier if you can get away with doing it that way, but some people are anal and want to do it right, and I understand, but I had one weekend and that was it, and it worked out.

one of my idler pulleys disintegrated, I replaced both of them (even though my dad kept telling me to just do the one that broke). and put on a new belt. some other new things as well, but i forget.

and I had it retimed after some other things happened last summer, right around $500, i think like $524.

You dont want to fuck with timing on these motors. If you dont know what you are doing, then dont attempt to do it. These motors are very complicated. Unless you are very mechanicaly inclined I would reccomedn that you leave it to the dealer. I would not trust a ghetto shop. There are alot of specialty tools and extreme patients required. But it can be done.

I did mine last winter, cost me about $330 in parts from the dealership, not too terrible a job, provided you have the proper tools, patience, and plenty of time for the first time, also bank of buying new cam cover gaskets as well as intake gaskets.

you can buy a timing kit from dayco that both idlers and tensioner for about $130

and the belt for like $40 and with gaskets you can get out of it for abut $200 total if you do it yourself

it does takes time and patience I just did mine last month and runs like a charm.

in northern mn. my car has a 192k on it so i think its just gonna go to the junkyard and look for something new

I wouldn't replace any of the timing components with JY ones, with maybe the exception of something like a cam gear or something that doesn't otherwise break (which seems like it defeats the purpose in your case). Replacing that with JY stuff is just asking for it to break again.

Have you checked to see if it's your belt yet? its two 8mm(IIRC) bolts to take the cover off, that would be the first step.

the guy who towed me was a mechanic nad he said it was. i didnt mean im using jy parts im gonna bring my car to the jy and get rid of it

WHERE ARE YOU? I'm in the Northern Wastelands, too. Timing belt work is no big deal. If you're really gonna scrap the car, at least let me know how far away you are and how much you want for it--I have a soft spot in my head for 3.4s.

Brian, everyone knows you don't like the 3.4. So if it is a topic about a 3.4, and you have no good input, then please stay out. Not trying to come down on you or anything, but we've gotten a few complaints about it.
