RareGMFan Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 So....this was a great weekend. Coming home from work, I stopped to grab some food, and shot down Rt. 59 to see if the BP down the street was any cheaper than the other gas stations. No go, so I made a left at the light at that intersection to go home through the side streets. Welp, this Honda CRV gets in the left turn lane at the last second in front of me. We turn left. She's going super slow, occasionally dropping down to single digit MPH. I was getting pretty fed up after a few such near stops. Finally, she slowed down to a complete stop, and I thought to myself "screw this". I accelerate to go around her. Well apparently, she found the house she was looking for, because she turned left right into my car trying to get in the driveway. I saw her coming at me, and heard the thumping of plastic. My mind immediately went into surreal mode. I pulled over to the right in front of her, and she pulled over behind me. I got out and looked at the passenger side. Much to my surprise, there was a lot more damage than just a clipped mirror (housing was bent, but in tact; the mirror itself popped out). There were scrapes going down almost the entire length of the passenger side. The driver's door had crumples in it, and the bottom moldings were torn to hell. I was numb at this point. It felt like I was in a terrible dream, and I'd wake up at any moment. It just didn't seem like it was actually happening. After making sure everyone was alright, I called the cops, and was directed to the DuPage sheriff's office because it was unincorporated Naperville. The driver of the Honda had to be around 16 or 17. As she puffed away on a cigg, I heard her ask something to the nature of "where are they? It didn't take this long at the last accident". :? Anyhow, after someone finally got there, he took both our stories down. She admitted she was looking for an address, so she was slowing down, and speeding up. Both our accounts of what happened matched up. I was cited as being at fault, because "even though I would have done the same exact thing, she technically still had right of way. Had she pulled way over to the right with her turn signal on, it would have been a different story". He didn't give me a ticket though because it was "just miscommunication and a freak incident". And that was that. I left, and went straight home. I certainly wasn't in the mood to do anything else that night. As it finally started to sink in a bit as to what happened, I started getting more and more pissed off. I couldn't get to sleep till 6 AM. I just kept replaying over and over again all the little things that could have gone half a second differently so that this wouldn't have happened. "Why did you have to stop to get something to eat tonight? Why did you have to go check on the gas price right this minute? Why did you take that street to turn back towards home? Why didn't you pass her sooner/later? The impact started after 1/4 of my car was passed her. How did she not see me???" Of course, these were all pointless, meandering thoughts because it was done and over with, and nothing could be done about it now, but I couldn't help the thoughts. This was my first accident, and it was a really STUPID one at that. And it had to wait to happen to the nicest condition car I've had yet. I've got more coverage than any human being needs with a $100 deductible, but still, it's just not going to be the same. Anyhow, here are some shots of the damage. It's actually pretty hard to see in these pics... SO.....how was everybody else's weekend? Quote
blackbombshell95 Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 Sad to hear. I think it is BS that it is your fault. This is why I hate and love cars. Fun to drive but i'm too afraid to get it into an accident. Quote
mfewtrail Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 Ouch. Have you got any estimates yet? Also, is that front tire low on air or is that just how it looks? Quote
Andrew Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 shitty. since its insured, go to the best shop possible. PS - my weekend was nice and boring for the most part. Quote
Guest JuniorBaconChee Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 Wow, that profile pic looks alot like my Buick does, with those dents. The diff is you have a nice car and mines a hunk of shit. That blows man, at least you're insured. When absolute crap rains down on you in a short period of time, its proof that god has a hell of a sense of humor. Quote
Psych0matt Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 not nearly as bad as I had imagined, but still crappy none the less Quote
Q-Ball Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 Similar story happened to me. But for me it was in Feb, with huge snow banks. This car was parked on the right side with parked cars on the st. I am following my buddy, he gets by like nothing. I go by and they start pulling out and I try to avoid and slide on a snow bank of snow and slam into them. Fucking forieners tried suing me and shit. I got a careless charge, I went to fight it and got it down to an illegal lane change (I was scared at the time and said ok) But that still meant I was accepting guilty. But now my insurrance says I wasnt at fault. I really cant wait to switch insurrance companys for a better rate too now! Sorry to see that, but I didnt do much damage to my parents 01 montana. Busted mirror and cracked bumper and a few dents. About 800 worth of damage. Quote
Euro Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 I was shocked when you told me D. I'm glad it's nothing major, just a few dents and some paint transfer. Fucking kids...... Quote
GOT2B GM Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 Take it to the best bodyshop you know, and be picky. Don't settle with mediocre bodywork on a car that nice. Quote
89SupremeCutty Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 that really sucks. i've been in a few accidents myself. it coulda been much worse though, but im glad to hear no one was hurt. Quote
Crazy K Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 damn. need me to find you a mirror? Quote
GP1138 Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Damn. Not as bad as I envisioned, and those pics of the side are so shiny that I keep thinking it's worse than it really is. Get it fixed though, for sure. I've seen a lot of amazing things from the body shop at my dealer. Quote
ZoomZoomFan Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 That sucks. Thank God you're insured. If that happened to me right now I'd be up shit creek without a paddle. We have liability only on the GA. Quote
rockfangd Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 i know exactly how you feel. been there done that. Everyone wonders why i drive like a granny but if they see what i see they might understand. Good example tonight when some white acura legend decided to fly through a yield doing like 50 in a 30 he was so close that i could feel the rush go past my car.... That would have been a very bad accident if he hit me. especially from the left . Thank god for insurance and your life. Damn dumbass people Quote
1990lumina Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 That sucks man...hope it goes back together properly for you. It's hard to say who is at fault here, but forgive me for saying I don't think you are 100% innocent either. Shitty either way though. Quote
Grand Moff Joseph Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Although I drove a lot in HS...at the rate these teenage asshats are going, I say we raise the driving age to 18. Quote
wildbill Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Sorry to hear about your bang up, you'll be alright. Always use the horn, just blast it and scare the crap out of them next time. As for the body shop make sure they use only Genuine GM parts. Hopefully you can get them to repaint the whole thing. Quote
Euro Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Although I drove a lot in HS...at the rate these teenage asshats are going, I say we raise the driving age to 18. I freaking second that notion!!!!!!!! Quote

AWeb80 Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 That Sucks D. I Wrecked My Gp Too This Weekend. Quote
GutlessSupreme Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 ugh sucks ass. that's the worst kind of fender bender. you bend their fender and they bend every single fucking panel down the side of your car Quote
RangeStang Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 You are alot calmer than I would have been. When she said it did not take this long last time! Quote
RareGMFan Posted November 15, 2007 Author Report Posted November 15, 2007 Sad to hear. I think it is BS that it is your fault. This is why I hate and love cars. Fun to drive but i'm too afraid to get it into an accident. It's hard to say who is at fault here, but forgive me for saying I don't think you are 100% innocent either. Shitty either way though. Oh, I'm not saying I'm guilt free in this mess by any means. But ultimately, it was her lack of consideration for anyone behind her that led up to it, and her inexperience that actually allowed the impact. She either panicked when she saw me going around her, and tried to beat me to the driveway, or she just flat out missed me next to her till she hit me. The impact started behind my front wheel, so 1/4 of my car was already passed her when it happened. Either way, it was just a freak thing, which is what's pissing me off the most, and is also why no one was given a ticket. Take it to the best bodyshop you know, and be picky. Don't settle with mediocre bodywork on a car that nice. Oh I plan on it. This is one car where I'm not interested in skimping on anything. There wasn't a single door ding or scratch ANYwhere on the body of this car prior to this incident (minus some very minor nicks on the front and rear bumpers). Also, get some tint! Meh. I actually don't care for the tinted windows look. Not to mention, you'd be pulled over in this snotty suburb in a heartbeat for stuff like that. damn. need me to find you a mirror? Thanks for the offer, Ken, but I'm sure I could find everything I need around here pretty easily should I decide to go the used route. We'll see what the body shops say, first. Damn. Not as bad as I envisioned, and those pics of the side are so shiny that I keep thinking it's worse than it really is. Actually, the photos aren't showing the crinkles in the front door very well. The sheet metal is a bit more rippled than they're letting on. That sucks. Thank God you're insured. If that happened to me right now I'd be up shit creek without a paddle. We have liability only on the GA. I've always had an obscene amount of coverage, my biggest fear being someone else hitting me, not the other way around. I'm 31, and this is my very first accident. The only other claims I've ever had to make were hit and runs in parking lots, where I'd go into a store or work, and come back to find damage on my car without a note (posted about this happening to the TGP towards the end of last winter). That Sucks D. I Wrecked My Gp Too This Weekend. Yeah, Matt told me on AIM. Not a good weekend for GPs, according to some ClubGP guys, too. At least I didn't wreck anything custom on my car like yours. Hope that wasn't your only set of those grilles. You are alot calmer than I would have been. When she said it did not take this long last time! Trust me, I've chased people for MUCH lesser things. Ordinarily, I would have gone nuts. But being everything happened so fast, and it was so bizarre, I literally went into one of those "feeling of unreality" moments, where you almost feel out of your body. I kept thinking I was going to wake up any moment, and the nearly mint GTP would still be in tact in the parking lot. Quote
