282 seal part #s? and grinding question

ello ello,

does anyone happen to have part numbers for the axle seals and intermediate shaft seal for the 282? Most places I see have "output shaft" listed which I assume are the axle seals, but I haven't seen the intermediate shaft seal. I have also seen input shaft and shift shaft(?).

I went to autozone today, and they had all 3 that I need clearly labeled on the screen, but they showed up unavailable (of course then the website says the output seals are available. probably under different part numbers, but the difference between the two systems sucks). It did clearly say "intermediate shaft seal" though, on the in-store computer.

Also, most of the time when I shift into third, the tranny grinds a little. Does this mean the syncro is on the way out?

i'd say your syncros are on their way out, my 284 is OK most of the time but if i try and go from 2-3 fast it will usually grind like a mother, normal driving is ok.

does double clutching help it any?

Double clutching is for transmissions WITHOUT syncros... Blown syncros will always cause a grind, and eventually no gear.

gah. gay.

haven't tried double clutching yet. It seems like if I hold the shifter off to the left while shifting into third it does it less. of course then I end up hitting first at 30 mph

always is a pretty blanket statement. I know mine is OK under most driving, however if i am trying to drive fast double clutching will help keep it from grinding / grinding as bad.

another quick question - if I have to remove my transmission, my slave cylinder would need to be emptied and bled again, and would be as good as scrap, right? I mean, I guess I could try some weak zip ties or something to hold the piston if I had to rebleed it. maybe.

i've removed the slave cylinder numerous times (and the pushrod fully extends of course) and then put it back on and no problem at all, didn't even need to bleed it again. i never had a slave cylinder go bad and never even had to buy one. i'm wondering if the grinding could be that your clutch hydraulic system has some air in it? probably not, but that could be it. i don't think i've ever had a syncro problem with the numerous 282s in my old Cutlass. sound like syncros though since it only happens from 2-3 shift.

as for the seals, do you mean the axle seals? i'm not sure of the part # but i easily got them from NAPA just asking them for axles seals for a '90 Grand Prix 3.1/5-speed. i might have posted the part # in an old thread; i'll have to look. as for the intermediate shaft seal, it is actually a big o-ring. i just took my old one down to Checker and found one the same size....worked fine.

neato, thanks for the info josh. I was hoping you'd chime in too since I know you've had your fair share of 282 swapping and dealing  I'm glad the slave cylinder isn't as big a deal as I thought it was.

As for the grinding, I definitely don't think that's a problem with the hydraulics I have no problem shifting in any other gear. It's not just 2-3 though, it's 4-3 too. I'll deal with it for now and I'll just take it easy. Does the intermediate shaft just unbolt and pull out?

ah that sucks. hopefully it will last awhile!

to remove the intermediate shaft you need to unbolt thoes 3 bolts, then slide the tube cover off. after that it will be just a shaft, and you need to grip onto it with a big vice grips and then use a hammer to tap on the vice grips until it comes out (a C-clip holds it in). be sure to cover the shaft with a rag when you lock the vice grips on it so you don't scratch it or anything. should come out fairly easy; you don't have to beat the hell out of it or anything.

14092900 - axle seals (discontinued)

we had some axle seals lying around that actuall worked. they were tighter than the stock seals. not sure what they were form, thought. i do have a set of GM seals, but i'm keeping them.

lol it's alright, I ordered a set from NAPA for Monday. I'm not too worried about them, I just need my expensive syncromesh to stop pissing in my driveway.

I know for the 284 they told me the axle seals would eventually be discontinued. I think when I got them they where just remaining stock.

I tried getting some from Murray's the ones they had where metal and didn't fit worth a shit.
