EGR Valve questio

okay, so i have a 1994 grand prix SE 2dr with a 3100 SFI motor.

the car has 165k miles on her, and is still running relatively well.

i have done the lower intake, (headgaskets etc)

in about july, i noticed the car wasnt running right, didnt seem to have much get up when i mashed it with the motor warm. so checked out the EGR valve, and lo and behold! it was leaking! hooray! 230 bucks later, i got a new one installed. (OEM from advanced auto) that lasted about a week. so i figured the cat was clogged, cut it off, gutted it, welded it back on, and had the old EGR valve replaced under warranty.

it is now october. there is yet another leak in the EGR valve. what is causing it to go bad? any ideas? i have done nothing aftermarket to the motor, everything is bone stock. the only thing it doesnt have now is a catalytic converter.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yea, replacing those valves is just throw money away since they are expensive for our cars.

Remove the valve, get new gaskets (a must) and use carb cleaner to clean it out and the pipe that runs to the rear manifold.

well, it isnt that expensive anymore, i had already bought a brand new one a couple months back, and it is under warranty so replacing is not aproblem, i just want to try and figure out why it is still going out.

i just pulled mine apart, sprayed the heck out of it with brake cleaner, and put it all back together, reusing everything, and it's been fine for over a year. replacing isn't a bad thing, I just didn't end up needing to

You can put a million EGR valves on there, but if that port is no clear/clean it will ALWAYS throw a code after a while.

i completely agree! i thought my problem was originally the cat, b/c it was clogged, so i gutted that. and that is why i am coming to you guys to figure out what crap is going on, and why it is still killin em!

thanks for all the advice! i will have to try em all out.

I would clean it with some brake cleaner and a pick or a screwdriver. Does it have a bleed filter? If so, change that as well. They can get clogged and cause the EGR to kick in but I think those are only on the Vacuum operated EGR's.

Take a can or brake cleaner, scrub out the hole where the EGR at the plenum, and the tube that feeds the EGR the exhaust gasses by using a long small flat head. let it sit for 2 minutes or so then start the car with the EGR off the car. Don't stand near it as it will shoot flames. shut the car off after a minute, allow it to cool and reassemble.
