Robby1870
To preface this, I replaced the starter back in May of this year. Now, the problem. After the car is warmed up, if I turn it off and try to restart shortly after turning it off (a few minutes), sometimes all I get is click of solenoid. What happens is I turn the key to ON, let the fuel pump prime, then turn to START, get a click, go back to ON then back to START and get another click. After this I go back to OFF and then back to ON, then START and it starts up fine. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, my thoughts are battery cables (I did install new screws on the battery ends), AUX. terminal, and Ignition/Lock cylinder. I haven't checked the AUX terminal nut in a while, but last time I did it was fine. I've always kinda thought the Ignition/Lock cylinder was bad because this problem is worse when I have the Security Lighting turned on (this circuit ties into the Ignition/Lock cylinder circuit), thus I never have the security lighting on. Any thoughts?
Psych0matt
my problem is the same. havent done anything about it, sometimes when its really warm it wont want to start for upwards of 20 minutes, but fortunately this summer it only did that a few times. Crazy K
PN saftey switch? I have rebuilt these. can't hurt to try. the 94/95 ones are often worn out.
1990lumina
If it was the P/N switch the solenoid shouldn't click though - the starter circuit should be dead completely, no?
ManicMechanic
Yes, Jeff. My 1992 does this, but it will start after 5 or so tries. The 1994 did it, I replaced the starter (with a newer gear reduction unit) and never has done it again.
Psych0matt
i replaced the starter when i did the engine, the exact same problem
SleeperRed90TGp
Robby, to check the solenoid put a volt meter on the little post, other end to ground. Turn the key to start, 12v should maintain as long as the key is in start. If 12v is maintained its your selonidor possibly a cable but I doubt its a cable. Crazy K
If it was the P/N switch the solenoid shouldn't click though - the starter circuit should be dead completely, no? No. if the condition of the contacts is POOR... the circuit could allow some voltage through.... but not enough to do much at all. In fact... the circuit may even be complete until voltage hits it, at which point the connection breaks as the contacts loose continuity. my 95 3100 sedan won't start in neutral, nor does it have reverse lights at this moment due to a worn out switch. with only 120,000 miles on it... the contacts are completely worn away. this switch wears out FAST! I tried lubing it, but it did not work and I have not yet replaced it.
Robby1870
P/N switch is a thought since I don't think I told them to replace that when I had the transmission rebuilt.
Q-Ball
I got the same problem. I took the starter to get tested and they said it was a bad connection. So I took a wirewheel to all the connections and cleaned them and it still does it. I have a 3100/3400 starter to install one day. I had the same problems, but i got this rebuilt one and it last great for about 8 months and now im back to square one.
