Spare TGP tranny - looks good

I finally got around to being unlazy, and I cleaned the tranny off considerably (used probably half a bottle of degreaser  ), and then pulled the pan. It was already drained at one point, and only had three bolts holding the pan on, so that made the job easier. There is a little bit of filing in the pan, but no chunks, and IIRC it is like 10x better than the one on the cutlass when I did it 3 or so years ago. I'll post up some before after pics of the tranny, and some pics of the pan as soon as I find my cable, that i think my roommate stole. otherwise, sometime this week I'll start breaking bolts loose here and there to get this one ready to go in! :willynilly:

anyways, once I get the pics up, I want you guys to make some assesments (which ambiguously enough was the point of the thread  )

came from Jay, the one I got the car from, had tons of spare parts, this tranny came from the parts car Ken and I semi stripped, but this trans was pulled a few years ago

That was the point of pulling the pan, to make sure there were no chunks. He said it was supposed to be a good one, but he never drove on it since he had other cars and didn't want to waste the time swapping it in after he blew this trans in my TGP

I hope so. I'm going to help him pull the 5 speed stuff off of his other TGP at some point (he's going built up 4t65HD), and we're just going to do an even trade, my little motorcycle that I can't sell for all of the 5 speed swap parts.

ok, pics:

I hate cork gaskets unless they got the sheetmetal with cork on each side. I havent been able to find the rubber gaskets anywhere though.

whats the black square?

I hate the cork gaskets too, don't worry, I'll be getting a new one.

black square is the magnet, isn't it?

Yea, the black square is the magnet.

I don't know a whole lot about auto's but that fluid looks really bad, imo. Maybe since it was drained, thats just the residual stuff that fell from sitting?! :dunno:

Has anyone heard leveling a tranny unfilled can allow rust to form on tranny parts? Maybe because its not covered, causing rust to form on those parts?

the fluid that came out was actually pretty red and clean, that in the pan is basically just the crud, almost no fluid in it. that pic was after whatever fluid seeped out from moving it around/tipping it up to get the pan off.

oh, and also theres a bunch that leaked out over the last few weeks in the corner of the garage where it's sitting, and it looks old/used, but not burnt or too dirty

Transmission filter kits from Auto Value are only $25 and come with a good rubber gasket and filter. Definetly recommend changing both, and that fluid would definetly make me nervous.

that fluid looks burnt and theres alot of metal shavings on the magnet there as well... Just get a good filter kit ( please dont use the cheap shit ) and put some good fluid in it and see how long she lasts

Yea, I guess he's right.

What do you have to loose putting the tranny in? Other than time and cost of materials. :willynilly:

What is a "good" filter kit. Because I've changed fluid a few times and it all looked kinda cheap to me. (I've used NAPA's in house, and some Murrays "filter king" crap.

bascally the difference is the filter itself.... just like you have different 'grades' of oil filters... basically the same thing with the tranny filter. Its the material of the tranny filter. I usually go to GM and get their filter kit... its only like $3 more than NAPA's anyways. But thats what I use.. everybody has their own brand they like soo..

Yea, I mean isn't it just metal bellows than try to catch the fluid? Or is there paper in it?

well I don't plan on driving it hard all that much anyways, just wanting to get it drivable for now. It needs new motor and tranny mounts anyways, so that'll be a good time to do that anyways, and I plan on getting swap parts for a 5 speed, and then next summer hunting for a 5speed trans. All I'll really waste is some time and elbow grease, because everything else needs to be done anyways :dunno:

Its paper just like the oil filter. What the paper doesnt catch, the magnet in the corner of the pan picks up.

Well this tranny should get you by until you can get the parts for your 5spd swap for sure.

as long as the general consensus is that the tranny itself is good. I know it's not going to be perfect and flawless, but it basically just needs to not be exploded like the one in it

I'm going to most likely trade the little motorcycle I was trying to sell for all the swap parts, and then all I'll need is the tranny itself

Not to get to analytical but how can we say its good unless we've driven it.

Personally if thats what was "at the bottom of the pan" and the rest of the fluid was red, its probably fine. But generally when fluid gets that dark, ohoh.
