Trying to start a Z34 that hasn't ran for nearly 3 years.

Any tips? The alternator died in January of '05 and the car has sat since. I just bought it and towed it home and am now looking to get it running. I've already bought a new battery and it cranks over, but it won't fire.

List of things I plan to check:

Plugs - probably just replace them since they are cheap.

Gas - would the gas in the tank be bad enough to cause the car not to run? I can hear the fuel pump pressurize, and the schraeder valve releases gas when I push it so it seems to have fuel pressure.

I pulled the uppper intake plenum and didn't see anything wrong - so now I have to replace that gasket.

Wires - they look to be in fine condition with no cracks or bare spots.

I looked over as much of the wiring under the hood as I could to see if any rodents had chewed through and didn't see anything worth noting.

I guess I was just hoping a new battery and she would fire right up - but I guess it will take more work than that.

I plan to test the coils to see if they are sparking, but they should be fine as they don't go bad often.

I checked all of the fuses under the hood and they were good.

I've pulled the cam covers and there was oil on the cams so I know the oil is circulating - even though it is old and probably should be changed.

Does anyone have any ideas for what else I could try?

BTW, this is my first post here since late '04 I'm guessing. :)

sounds like you have no spark, see if you have spark, and work from there? if it is a manual changing the crank sensor is a cinch, or if it is an automatic when you change the alternator, it is easy to get at it then.

I'm still trying to burn off an entire tank of almost 2 year old gas in the TGP  it seems to run fine on it :dunno: the last few times i've started it though it's stalled on the first start, but that's probably what happens with 2 year old gas

Thanks for the tips everyone! I haven't had a chance to mess with the car since I posted, but should get a chance to next week. I would work on it this weekend, but I'm taking the GTP to the track.

I was wondering where you've been.

You remember me? I don't recognize your name.

It's not gorgeous any more. It's for sale on the forum here... lol.

The Blue GTP has been parted out? When? Do you know why?

Dr. Rodey the guy who bought it parted it out....dunno why.

I wanted the rear buckets bad, but he wanted WAY too much for them....$250 + shipping IIRC.

I loved that car....you had every mod done to it when you sold it that I'd have done to it......and it looked soo sweet w/ no spoiler...it was such a gorgeous car....Love the Blue

your gas is bad!!! dump your fuel tank out and put in fresh stuff.

Yeah, get a piece of garden hose or tubing and start sucking! Now that.... that's funny!

It has been a long time since I've heard of you. You had that black Z34 right?! We were both on the Lumina Z34 message board at one time, oh the momeries.

It was an alright car. It was pretty beat up - the pictures didn't show everything. Yea, it had a lot of "mods" but it was still relatively slow. Fun to drive, yep, but that was about it. Oh yeah, comfy seats. I'm still into W-Bodies.. I've got a 99 GTP with a big turbo now.
