NVMY03GT Posted October 21, 2007 Report Posted October 21, 2007 Any hope for it? I have two spots on my rear bumper that the paid is just starting to fade away. Is there a rubbing compound I can put on it to help brighten or shine it? The bumper is plastic so I know my options are limited. Quote
NVMY03GT Posted October 21, 2007 Author Report Posted October 21, 2007 Will get them today - Also will post pics of the spoiler - I think the spoiler can be revived as its just the clear coat thats gone, but will get pics today. Quote
NVMY03GT Posted October 21, 2007 Author Report Posted October 21, 2007 Alright- Son went down for a nap so I snapped off a few pics with day light: Finally - The spoiler: Quote
digitaloutsider Posted October 21, 2007 Report Posted October 21, 2007 The clearcoat on the spoiler is removing itself rather rapidly. There's not really anything you can do aside from a repaint. Same goes for the bumper. Quote
Scottster Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Yeah, that's cooked. A good amount of polishing may reduce the effect on the bumper minimally, but it will never look right. Needs to be resquirted. Quote

Same goes for the bumper. Well Ive seen guys from ClubGP redo the spoiler with over the counter stuff - basically it involves doing a wet sand and then doing some re-clearcoating. I just wasn't too sure on the bumper since technically its not metal or fiberglass I don't know what my options are. Quote
Scottster Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Yeah, I would do the spoiler myself. If you are going to sand it down, you may aswell repaint it aswell, not just clear. It's a small isolated trim piece, so you could easily mask it off. Quote

Grand Moff Joseph Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Reshoot them both. That's the only way to get it done right. Quote
NVMY03GT Posted October 23, 2007 Author Report Posted October 23, 2007 Reshoot them both. That's the only way to get it done right. Since Im new to the paint world how much would each cost to do? Quote
NVMY03GT Posted October 23, 2007 Author Report Posted October 23, 2007 What about those OTC Paint blending compounds? It wouldn't work on the spoiler obviously but what about on the bumper? Quote
Grand Moff Joseph Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Any good body shop (NOT Maaco) should get those both done for under $600, out the door. Quote

digitaloutsider Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Prep it yourself, then have Maaco paint it. Quote
Euro Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Prep it yourself, then have Maaco paint it. x2. Painting a car isn't rocket science, but I've heard Maaco sucks at prepping a car and that is everything if you want a great finished product. Quote

Euro Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Pretty much just sanding IIRC. I haven't painted anything in a while. Just get the surface smooth and defect free so the paint can adhere to the surface. Quote

wildbill Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 Start with 220 grit and finish with 400 grit, then clean it up and paint. You should prime some areas of you sand too deep. Between paint coats just do a lite sand with 400 or higher grit paper. Quote
