GhrarhG
So it seems that I will be pulling my engine out this Thanksgiving break from college. I will be replacing the clutch, as the original is shot. I was thinking about doing a cam while the engine is out. There are a few other things i will be doing at the time, but it comes down to two questions. Hypothetically, if I were to turbo my 2.8, and my clutch needed replaced, what clutch would be best. I know the Stage 3 will hold a lot of power, most likely more than my car will ever make, but I don't see my ultimate goal for the car being anywhere near 450 ft-lbs. I know that with more boost, the 3.1T can be a torque monster. With the shorter crank I won't be putting out as much torque. I'd debating between the Spec Stage 3 and the Spec Stage 2 or maybe 2 +. I will be driving this car on the road a decent amount in fairly heavy traffic at times. Which clutch would you recommend? Looking for advice from people that have them. How's the drivability with the stage 3? Also, does anyone know the principle differnces between the comp cams h260 and the crane cams h 260. I figure I'm going to do a cam at the same time if possible, and there seems to be a decent price differnce between the two. I noticed that the crane is a dual pattern, with greater exhaust lift that the comp cam. Again, if I was hypothetically going turbo in the futer, which of these would be best, also noting that the comp cam is $80 cheaper?
19Cutlass94
You wont get 450ftlbs out of that 2.8 with out ALOT of work... your better off dropping in a turbo'ed 3400 if you want that kind of power... even then you gotta mod the 3400. Just go with the normal spec clutch... There are different cams for N/A and boost... I dont believe either of those would be the best choice for boost
GutlessSupreme
Spec Stage 3 and Crane H260 is my exact combo in my TSTE (though I haven't exactly done a lot of driving with them yet). The Stage 3 is very grabby (I'm not completely used to driving a stick regularly yet, but I like to think of it as an on/off switch). I just wanted to get something that hopefully I wouldn't have to replace in year or two. I don't think I'll ever make the max power for the clutch, but I figured it should hold up better to my turbo/newbie stick driving abuse better. I think most here that have an H260 cam have the Crane one. I know nothing about cam profiles but I think the Crane is supposed to be better for out setup. GhrarhG
I know I would never be anywhere near 450, and I wouldn't want to be. This just isn't the right car for it in my opinion. Now if it was say a Z06 or something sure. I just want a clutch that holds well and will last a while, even if I do manage to up the power. Does anyone have a stage 2 or 2+. I just figured the 2 and the 3 cost the same, and if the pedal feel is close, might as well get the better one. But if 3 is grabby, it's probably not what i want. Andrew
i have heard that the spec 3 is too grabby for a daily driver, so stick with the spec 2. as for the cam, i have no clue.

TurboSedan
i had a Luk Rep Set in my Turbo 5-speed Cutlass and it did great only $150 too. my brother has them in his Turbo Dodges too - no problems at all.
GhrarhG
How is the life of the Luk clutches. I heard they weren't all that great? For those that have them, how many miles do you have on it? Thanks, Jon
BXX
Oops on the 'server error' Whoever said Luk clutches are bad is a complete idiot.
GhrarhG
I just saw a couple of posts that said "they suck bawlz" in one of my searches on this forum. I didn't know if there was any truth to it, but that's why I'm posting now. I would much rather spend half as much money for the Luk if it'll last a while. 19Cutlass94
I will tell you this... I wouldnt buy any clutches from napa... spend the money and get a spec.
GutlessSupreme
I think Josh (turbosedan^) put at least 70k on his Luk clutch, many while turbocharged, and had no problems. I'm sure he'll chime back in.

Include some info to support your claim Ive sold a couple of them and Ive seen them come back not looking very good at all. Ive seen the springs pop out, the material destroyed... They could have been a defective material I duno. The clutches that we sell are from Perfection HY-Test Company. I would much rather spend the money for a spec. BXX
Eh, prolly installer error Outta prolly a couple hundred clutches I have sold while working at AutoZone, I have had 3 clutches come back destoyed. 2 were the obvious ricer-boy Civic clutch dump victims, and the other was a 14" clutch for a dump truck. Most I sold were manufactured by Cumberland or Perfection and had no issues. The Luks always had zero comebacks.
19Cutlass94
They could have been for all I know but I have seen a couple come back. I just think that spec is a better quality product IMHO
BXX
Actually, since I know a Luk rep, and I can literally pick clutches up from him by driving 2 minutes, I think I could get a Luk set for under $
19Cutlass94
yeah theres no way I could sell one of our clutches for these cars for under $100 ( unless it was my price ) cause the site is listing it at $259.00. id have to check what we charge since the price will vary
BXX
When I worked for AutoZone, the Luk rep would come in quite often, mainly to shoot the shit with us in back running commercial sales. I still had my GP at the time and thought I could use a newer clutch (actually air go into the slave cylinder somehow) and he told me I could have one for $70... Shoulda took up the offer and just sat in the set and sold it
19Cutlass94
should have! we almost never get any reps coming in...
TurboSedan
actually i put the new Luk Rep Set clutch in when i turbocharged it. i put about 30,000 miles on it with no issues at all. still no issues with the new owner of the car. i was pushing 12-14psi and dyno'd 230whp & 337wtq with that car. i never felt it slip once ever. my brother has used nothing but Luk Rep Set clutch kits in his three Turbo Dodges, and no issues at all with them and many more miles than i had put on mine. he is also putting down alot more power than i did, ecspecially in his Omni GLH or Shelby Lancer pushing 20psi. i know Dan (sl3196) has a Luk Rep Set in his GTS (i put it in there lol) and as far as i know no problems at all with it. pretty sure he is putting down wayyyy more power than my Cutlass did because that car is a whole lot faster than the Cutlass ever was. oh, the clutch i put 70,000 miles on was a DynaPak by Borg Beck clutch kit IIRC. i put that in when i did the 5-speed swap but the engine was always NA with that clutch. if i did buy a Spec clutch, i think i would buy it simply for the pedal feel. something that was a bit more like an on/off switch would have been nice to try out but then again it might have been a pita for city driving. GhrarhG
I do plan on turbocharging the engine eventually. Turbosedan, if the Luk didn't slip on your car I'm sure mine will be ok. I don't mind spending the extra cash on the spec, but I wouldn't mind being able to put the money towards other parts, like a cam, or wb 02, or something.
