DRGrocho
I don't have a Chilton or Haynes manual for the 1991 Regal GS that I just bought, so can somebody just post up the procedure for changing a front wheel bearing? I'm trying to decide whether or not to do it tomorrow after I change the oil on the Lumina again.
5speedz34
Basically remove the brakes. The big CV Nut 35mm or 36mm? Unbolt the 3-4 bolts behind the strut tower and disconnect abs lines if equipped, and it should come right out!
Bri-Guy-GA
on my 95 GP they were 36mm. You also need a gear puller or something to push the axles out of the bearing unit. Loosen the bolt with somebody holding the brakes if you don't have an impact gun. Make sure you replace the axle nut with new ones. The manual says to never re-use these nuts. DRGrocho
Eh, I'm not that motivated. I just hate having to do anything with the CV shafts...I'll probably just sell the car with the bad hub and hope it doesn't freeze up in the mean time. Yeah, that nut probably comes from the factory with some sort of adhesive/lock-tite on it. You could probably clean it really well with a good solvent and apply some red locktite on it and it would be about the same. The thing about the nut is the same for the middle of a 2-piece driveshaft, and those get staked as well.
5speedz34
I've never heard of not re-using those nuts? I've re-used them on numerous vehicles and none of my service manuals say anything. There is nothing to them, just nuts. The wheel bearing should come right off the CV, Since it is in front of the strut tower assembly. Basically unbolt get a hammer to loosen the CV shaft off and slide off. They are not that hard.,
GutlessSupreme
they're technically 35mm for the axle nut, but 36mm works if you can't find a 35. break it loose, remove the 4 rear bolts (careful if it's rusty, don't strip them), and give it a couple of whacks to knock it loose. Careful putting the hub bolts back in too, I've broken two of them. They're $4 a piece from the dealer, I have the part number somewhere if someone needs it. joey b
I would suggest not using an impact to remove the hub to knuckle bolts. I've broken 2 on the same bearing before.
rockfangd
overall it is not a difficult job unless you dont take your time and make it difficult
GOT2B GM
on reassembly, don't forget about the washer behind the CV axle nut. If it's not in there, the nut won't tighten up on the bearing like it should.
intern8tion9l
i've gotten the process of changing a front wheel bearing down to 20-25 mins from the time i jack the car up to the time its back on the ground. it's cake
Nick1234
agreed. spray the back 4 bolts a couple days in advance. i always reuse the nut for the axle. but you may need a long breaker bar. and you need the special socket or star thing (can't think of what is called for the life of me right now) to remove the caliper bracket.
