mclaren gfx (yes i searched)

I figured this would be a really repetitive question on here but i couldnt find it anywere so here it goes.

I'm new to the W body and TGP's and I'm looking to make a TGP clone, now I know some people will say just buy one, but 1. I dont have a few grand laying around to buy one and 2. my grand prix is mint other than the peeling clear coat.

I'm looking for stock GTP ground effects and from what I've read so far they are the same on the 91-94 SE cars with the exception of the front bumper, so here lies my issue, were can i get a TGP front bumper? I've been comparing pictures of all the diffrent bumpers and from what i can tell the lower vealence is seperate from the rest of the bumper and comes on not only the TGP but other SE's as well making it a little easier to find. But is it just as easy as finding a 91-94 SE and swaping all the GFX minus the front bumper (stick with my composite headlight front end) and just put the veilance on it.... my only worry is the fender flares wont match up to the bumper.

Also the spoiler and rims, are those a TGP only things as well?

I also noticed the "mclaren" badge in the driver side grill, but i can have that made by a sign/badging guy i know.

Is there anything else I'm missing when comparing a TGP to a fully loaded grand prix?

thanks in advance

Sounds like a nice project...here's some tips.

1) The McLaren badge on the front grille is actually an aftermarket deal, not stock. Stock has PONTIAC written there; Jeff M. made the McLaren badge as a free gift to anyone who bought his crossovers and chips.

2) Right now, on eBay, there are stock ground effects for a Turbo Grand Prix, minus the front bumper. Now, finding the front bumper has been a chore for more TGP owners, so your best bet is the check out junk yards. There aren't many that show up on here for sale.

3) Yes, the bottom valance is a seperate piece from the front bumper, and yes the 91-93 year valances will work as well.

4) No TGP came with a spoiler. EVER. If you see one with one, it has been added aftermarket.

5) The gold-laced rims are not TGP specific, as I've seen a few others with them as well, though I believe the gold crosslaces from the 94-96 era changed slightly?

6) If you choose to install the B4M/B4U kit, you will need the front bumper in order to make the flares line up; it looks terrible when someone has the SE bumper and the rest of the B4M/B4U kit.

7) The gauges are analog and Turbo specific on the TGP, whereas SE's are digital.

8) You need to decide if you want to duplicate an 89 or 90 TGP, as the interiors changed. 1989 had flat leather seats (1990 has ribbed), a security lighting switch, English/Metric switch for the HUD, Premium Sound switch on the driver's side door, different rear speaker shelf behind the rear seats, and a few other differences.

I think this is a nice idea, so long as you don't claim to be a real TGP lol.

I dunno about several single kind of W wheel, but I know that all GP crosslaces are 8" wide. A lot of people thought they weren't for some reason, but I'm pretty sure it's been proven wrong. I bought a silver crosslace on ebay off a 95 GTP and it was the same exact wheel as on my TGP, besides the center caps. I can't remember what the other GP wheel sizes are (5 spokes and stock STE wheels). I think they both might be 6.5"

thanks for the info this is just the kind of stuff I was looking for. I'm planing to reproduce a 90 because thats what mine is, it already has analoug (sp?) guages and the phnematic seats, just have to have them wraped in leather. the only interior feature I'm missing is the HUD and I'll never find a TGP in the wreckers cause I'm in canada.

also about the front bumper, I figured out a way I can get one, the 91-94 front bumper is the same as the mclaren bumper except it has the counter sunk headlights, so I'll just dremel that part off and use the top half of my SE bumper and just kind of graft them together with a little plastic welding and a lot of sanding, I've done it before to put a cavalier z24 kit onto a sunbird with flip up lights and it worked out well, you couldnt even see the seams were i merged the two.

What all cars did the cross laced wheels come on? and do you think a 245 wide tire would fit on a 6.5 rim, if they are indead smaller?

Anything else TGP specific, even the smallest of details, I want this done right.

thanks for teh help so far

Are those badges still available? Ive got the stock pontiac one on mine, a mclaren badge would be cool.

No, the there were only a handful of the McLaren badges made.

245 is too wide for a 6.5. It might fit, but it's pushing it. The crosslaces came on a lot of GPs, I think mostly earlier (maybe pre-'95) ones though. you could probably find some on ebay right now. (note that bonneville crosslaces aren't the same size, and I don't think the bolt pattern's right.)

Ive always wanted a z with flip up headlights, or a sunbird with a phaze 1 z kit, either way

I had a older flip up front end (89) with a phase 2 Z kit, was never really a fan of the cavy interior either, always stayed away from the cavalier but i've had 3 sunbirds, and searching for my fourth and final (see sig)

Anyways back on topic here, good to know i can't use boneville rims, I see them alot and just assumed they were the same. but since i started looking i have seen a lot of GP's with the cross laces.

I'm curious about the HUD, is that a TGP thing only or do i have a chance at finding one in a highly optioned GP, I'm guessing not, unless it was a 91+ thing cause my 90 has everything but a sunroof and it dosent have HUD.

anyone have any pictures of a TGP interior preferably 1990, all i can seem to find is exterior pics.

Dear Mr. Efficiency,

I'm going to the junk yard tomorrow just for fun to see what I can find. If you post up a picture of the front bumper that you are looking for I can search for it tomorrow. I don't know much about GPs like the other guys here but there are alot of GP in this junk yard. Im in Chicago and will assist you the best I can. Please post up pictures or links to pictures of the front bumper you are trying to get.

I cant imagine the price for shipping a bumper, and plus i dont have a lot of extra $$$ to put into looks and such just yet, all my money is being thrown at this car to get it through inspection and plated right now, I'm just doing my research now, I'm not gunna start looking for parts for another month or so, have some other project money pits on the go as well, thanks for the offer tho.

I am on the look out tho for a set of "GTP turbo" badges, both doors and the rear (i think theres one on the rear) shipping on those would be cheap, lol
