Mr_Efficiency
I picked up a black 90 grand prix and it has all the options and toys excect its an auto, I plan to make it into a GTP clone and i'm curious what tranny would take the power of a mildly moded TGP motor. I've done auto to 5 speed swaps before on j bodies and N bodies but i'm new to the W body. I found an 89 grand prix with a 2.8 and a 5 speed, what tranny is this and will it take the power? I dont plan on many engine mods just upping the boost a little to maybe 10 psi max. If this trans is no good, I'll just use this car for pedals, shifter etc and get the trans from something else. thanks in advance
GutlessSupreme
It's a Getrag 282, and there are a couple of guys here (including myself, very recently) running them in TGPs. A lot of Fiero guys put them behind 350s. As long as it's not beat, it should hold fine.
1990lumina
The 282 can be built up somewhat as well if I'm not mistaken.
19Cutlass94
They can be rebuilt if you know what your doing. There are several members with a turbo 3.1 and a 282 tranny and they hold up very well.
Bake82
I don't think there is any issue with the 282's handling the power. I wouldn't want to use a 282 with more than 150-170k miles...just cuz IMO that's alot, but if it's got low milage and in good shape, it should last a LONG LONG time... Just don't drop the clutch at 5k rpm or run real sticky drag slicks and you should be more than fine. There are a FEW people running BIG HP #'s(350-500) with these trannies with very few issues. Mr_Efficiency
ok good I was hoping it was a 282, thats the same trans they use on the turbo sunbirds and I know guys putting 350hp through them no problem, its also the same trans I'm using in my sunbird build. I didnt check the K's on the 89 tho, have to check it out next time I'm there.

That's pretty close to me(well 2.5-3 hours) I'm in Ottawa. Next spring you'll have to come to our annual Ontario w-body meet in Kitchener/waterloo. Good times, good laughs and oh great beer! If you have any questions about the swap don't be afraind to ask.....I am just finishing up my own turbo 5 speed swap in my Cutlass Supreme! GutlessSupreme
I don't know if it's the same 282 that's in Sunbirds. It was my impression that most of the smaller cars had Isuzu 282's, not Getrags (the Isuzu trans is weaker). I think the V6s got the Getrag, though maybe they used that in the turbo sunbirds. Mr_Efficiency
I'll definatly have to show up to that meet, kitchener isnt to far from here at all. And yeah only turbo sunbirds got the getrag, making it extremely hard to find, since the 2.0 has an odd ball belhousing that nothing else fits and the isuzu trans is junk when dealing with any kind of significant power figures so you can only get a getrag for a sunbird from a turbo sunbird and they only made turbo sunbirds for 4 years and 80% of them were auto. Good news is tho that only the bell housing is sunbird specific and all the internals match the getrag from the v6 and such so theres lots of aftermarket for it, LSD, clutches and flywheels etc... Anyways, back to my swap, like i said i have done this to j and n bodies before but never a W, is there anything i need to know before i get into this? does the 5 speed mounts just bolt in there or do i have to customize a little? I'm guessing like all other GM cars I need to drill holes in the firewall for the clutch master to bolt in. I saw a pic on here of someone doing a 5 speed swap who removed the entire dash... thats not nessisary is it? I'm sure it makes it easier but thats a lot of work, lol
TurboSedan
nah you don't have to remove the dash. if your car was '94+ you would have to. the swap is pretty easy. it's all bolt-in except for modifying an existing hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder and drilling one hole in the floor for the shifter cables to pass through. if you use the 5-speed with a TGP engine you will need to make a custom turbo support bracket. you'll also need to get a TGP/5-speed chip or make your own. 88Regal Limited
Don't w-body 282's have slightly different gearing than the other gm platform 282's? And good luck with your swap.
