gpchris
Well my starter on my 95 3.1m gp is acting up so I figured I'd put my 3.4x starter in there since the headgaskets blown. IRC the 3.4x starter is a little bigger but still works. Anybody know? UPDATE BELOW
Psych0matt
it'll work, but why not get a new one?
slick
Yes, it will work.
ShockTherapy
it'll work like slick said, but why not get a 3100/3400 one ? lighter, more powerful, and less likely to take a shit...
19Cutlass94
If your going to get a 3100/3400.. get a newer one. The older ones are HUGE, as the newer, I wanna say 00+ are much smaller/better
gpchris
So I put a new 2004 3400 starter in and it takes a little longer to start. Is it possible that its just new and needs to adjust or something?
5speedz34
So I put a new 2004 3400 starter in and it takes a little longer to start. Is it possible that its just new and needs to adjust or something? Shouldn't need to adjust, is it shimmed? I would check all your connections, grounds, etc.
gpchris
When i said adjust i meant like work in the new parts.
5speedz34
When i said adjust i meant like work in the new parts. Right, and like I said it shouldn't need to "adjust" or "break-in".
gpchris
well do i put the lock washer before or after the battery cable? I think i put it in the wrong place...
gpchris
Well i'll just play around with it tomorrow.. I love it though, Its much smaller and its quieter. Anyway heres some pics of the starters
5speedz34
FRAM! Get that shit out of there! Horrible filters. That one doesn't seem as small as the one I put in for some reason. How much did it weigh roughly? IIRC-The lock washer should go before the battery cable.
gpchris
Ok i only used the fram because i'm flushing some crap out of my engine. I know better lol. And this starter is SMALL its just a little bigger than the solenoid. Its smaller than my lawnmower starter.... I was afraid the little guy couldnt handle a big engine lol
gpchris
Don’t know about weight but the stock is like 10 times as heavy.
5speedz34
Like I said that one doesn't seem as small but I want to say that its under 10 lbs. Your flushing stuff out so your using fram?
gpchris
no i'm flushing stuff out with seafoam, using the fram to catch all the shiz
gpchris
Ok i swapped the lock washer and it still starts like shit... I thought these things had more torque??? Total waste of money so far. The stock that i "rebuilt" starts it fine... I like that these things are small and quiet but if it cant start the car right.... Any ideas? Maybe I did something wrong? BTW it’s a 04 impala 3.4 starter.

BTW it’s a 04 impala 3.4 starter. They have plenty of power. I had no problems nor has anyone else. It starts the car, and the old starter was bad, so how was it a waste of money. I don't know like I said check your connections. Also check your aux. post.
gpchris
Heres a vid, it takes about 2 seconds to start where the stock took 1..
5speedz34
IMO, thats in the realm of ordinary. I would still check your connections though.
GP1138
WTF is wrong with that? Sounds fine to me!
19Cutlass94
your complaining about 2 seconds to start a car?
gpchris
hey 2 seconds doesnt sound bad but its a big diffference from the stock. IDK i'm getting more used to it.
GP1138
What I want to do is modify my starting circuit so it's like the newer Chevys I start day in and day out... so you just have to flick it on and then let go of the key, and it automatically starts it. Some do it, some don't, but all the Impalas (except with the immobilizer) do it.
