chadz34
I was wondering if someone who knows about pulling engines and transmissions....As most of you members know after the snow flys I'm havign a new transmission installed on my Lumina. I plan on saving some money here, I would like to pull the transmission out of the car and take it and have it rebuilt....and re-install it myself, I will have the help of my dad who is very mechanically inclined. Is this a simple thing to do? If so, any shortcuts and things that can save time would be awesome. Thank you! EDIT* The only reason I made a new thread about this is becuase most of the info on the board regards 3100's in the Engine Pull thread. Bake82
Chad, youre safest best might be to drop the motor and subframe together. For that you would need to undo the wiring harness from the firewall and ECM, then the rad hoses, power wires, un hook AC compressor(set aside) and then undue the steering rack pinch bolt(OR you can undue steering rack from subframe and remove the PS pump and lines) If you remove the steering rack, pump and lines, you need topop the tie rods out, if you un bolt the pinch bolt, then you woulnd't need to. Un bolt the 3 bolts for the strut tower, and then either un hook brake lines or take off calipers and tie up. this should be ready to unbolt the subframe bolts(which you will want to replace) and then support the car, and lower the motor, trans and subframe to the ground, and then lift the car up and over, and pull out subframe/motor/trans Should be a pretty good overview, I might have missed a thing or two tho....somebody else who has done it can hopefully fill you in! I still think you should do the 5 spd swap!! I think there is one forsale in Ontario too! he's asking 800 for everyuthing, but I bet he'll take less than that!! 19Cutlass94
If you just need to pull the tranny, why not pull it out the side? Remove the drivers side strut assembly, and slide it out that way. I know its somewhat easy ( shouldnt say easy, but easier than dropping the subframe ) on the 5spd's
