GPX
I usually run midgrade gas in my 3400 because I can tell that it runs better than on regular. The other day I had a couple extra bucks in my pocket, so I put in half a tank of premium just to see if there was a difference. Well, I swear there was a difference--it seemed slower! I didn't expect much if anything, but I didn't expect a performance decrease.'Splain, Lucy. PS: I have been told my ass-dyno needs to be recalibrated, but I don't want to believe that. Psych0matt
i ran premium for a while in the cutlass, and for the $ difference, theres nothing that says its worth it. maybe got 1mpg better if im lucky, but otherwise didn't notice anything, even when switching back

J
old topic. I studied it in auto for 2 years, if your car was not made to run it, IT IS A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY On the other hand some 87's and 86 octane gas is shit, it all depends on the brand
meltboy1
idk, I run super on my turbo GP, cuz it's recommended and get about 17-19mpg average overall, and I recently started runnin 89 in my 99 malibu, and I will say, I did notice a nice mpg jump, 4-5, giving me about 25-28ish depending on how much is highway miles... and it seems to perform a little bit better... but I am not about to put super in it, no way, it's too costly, and I really don't see it benefiting at all.. GutlessSupreme
I run Premium (93) in my TSTE, because you're supposed to. Other than that, none of your stock N/A motors have high enough compression to need anything over 87. Waste of money, especially in one of the pushrods. They just don't get enough air in there to need it.

digitaloutsider
Octane is a measurement of the fuel's resistance to burn.. of course it's going to run like ass on a low-compression N/A engine.
99RegalGS
Your car felt slower because it was slower!! You will make more power on regular then premium assuming you are getting no detonation, which I'm sure you're not with your car.. The other members are absolutely right when they say premium is a waste of money on engines that don't specify it.

So that's why I ran a 16.1 in the quarter... Time to pump some 87 and go for another run...
MonteCarloChick
How many threads do we need on this subject? An 87 car = 87 fuel. Period.
MonteCarloDude
my SL2 had 9.5:1 compression, i got the best MPG and it ran the best on 89 octane.

Andrew
the auto got a lower compression 3.4 than the manual.
rockfangd
my SL2 had 9.5:1 compression, i got the best MPG and it ran the best on 89 octane. agreed, i cant run low grade because my car guzzles it but mid grade is perfect, forget that expensive shit, also with gas prices being so high that that high grade gas probably chills for awhile and depreciates anyways, thus more money for less mileage. w-bodys_are_the_best
I've always ran the midgrade (89). Here in IA it's actually cheaper than 87 because they put ethanol in it, and I don't remember if it's untaxed or the state pays part of it or some shit like that, anyways it's the cheapest, and works the best. You must like to lose then I really can't tell much of a difference. Higher Grade seems to burn faster, but the car runs a bit better with quicker response when accelerating. I've always used Shell gas and have never had an issue. Cheap gas makes my car crazy. No more of that shit. And.... I have never lost. I've kept up with a Mustang 5.0 one time on Harlem in Berwyn. Guy looked surprised that we were even the whole way down. don't know much about 5.0s but I think I did good.
