GtipGary
I didnt know if i should have posted this in the other cars thread but since a powertrain problem i figured here. I recently bought a 96 GAGT from my dads fiances sister. She thought the motor was locked up but when i tried turnin the crankshaft it turned. So i knew the motor wasnt locked up. When i got it to my dads (pulled it with the grand prix ) I put a battery in it and it started, but was making a terrible knocking noise from the top end. I asked my dad if it ever did it before and he said no never she just parked it one day and then she couldnt get it to start after that. I was wondering if maybe from sitting the oil pump or oil filter could have gone bad and now wont send the oil up to the top of the motor? Or if i have a more serious problem than that? I only paid 200$ for it so i could get my money back in parts but i would like to get it running! BTW it has a 3100 in it.

GP1138
Did you make sure it had the proper amount of engine oil in it? I'd check the basics first.
GtipGary
I checked the oil... if anything it was half a quart low. But it was really black and i think the water from my tap is thicker.
Andrew
well just do a oil change to rule out a bad filter. how long has it sat? and i wonder if the starter is on the fritz, as to explain why it wouldnt start for her one day. GtipGary
It sat for at least six months. Or at least that was the first time i saw it. It could have sat for much longer for all i know. Im gonna try doing an oil change this weekend. Connecting rod? Spun a bearing? say that was the problem how hard is that to fix? GtipGary
3400 time!!!1!! Nah if its screwed then im just gonna pawn the car off in parts. OORRR i do have another smashed GA with the same motor. Just a hell of a lot less miles (63000) that runs great but is totaled. maybe its time for a 3100 swap. GtipGary
I talked to the owner of the totaled car thats been sitting in the back lot at our shop for over a year now. Its my cousins old car and she said that if i give her two hundred for it i can have the car. so two hundred for the first one and two hundred for this one ill have a decent looking, low mileage, good running car. Its no w-body but i can at least park the grand prix for the winter this way! Or sell it and fix all the shit that needs fixed on the gtp
GtipGary
So i went to my dads house this weekend to mess with this godforsaken car. I tried changing the oil which didnt do a damn thing (not that i thought it would but worth a shot). I then pulled off the valve cover in the front. The first thing that i noticed was an utterly horrendous amount of sludge. The only way you could tell where the rocker arms where was to look for the six tallest black blobs. They werent even distinguishable from anything else, it was unbelievable. I then proceeded to take all six rocker arms off, after that i started pulling the pushrods out. I got five of them out with no problem (the journals in all of them were filled with the sludge too) when i went to pull the last one out, i barely touched it with my finger tip and the damn thing fell back inside my motor. I think i found the problem!!
LumiDriver
Yeah, the GTP does need to be parked for the winter, that car is too sexy

No x2 There are NO (ZERO) interchangeable parts between 3.4 DOHC and ANY other engines. its based off the 2.8/3.1 bottom end, but the top end parts arent even close.
