xtremerevolution
Is there one available? I heard a cam with roller rockers would make a pretty huge performance gain on a 3800. Is there a place to get a 3800 series 1 cam? I don't suppose it would be very easy to install, but I figured I'd ask to see if it would be worth it. Motor might need to be pulled out a bit....um try COMP CAMS...And yes, big gains have been seen with any 3800 engine. Well I've had a lot of trouble finding a cam for this car. Either I don't know much about them or I don't know where to look. I cehcked the COMP CAMS website and they offer cams for the GM 3800, but I can't tell what 3800 engine that's for or even if it will fit in my car. I really have no idea... Any help would be appreciated. If I do put a cam in here (and I already have roller rockers installed), would I need to have any other modifications done to my car? I've heard of some people raising their redline, though I'm not sure. What would need to be done?
Andrew
mild cams wouldnt necessarily need any upgrades, depends on how much lift the stock valve springs can handle. moderate cams need to get stiffer valve springs, stronger spring retainers, and stronger pushrods. Euro
isn't there a website that sells Series 1 performance parts?
xtremerevolution
isn't there a website that sells Series 1 performance parts? There was...but apparently the guy never responds to anything and never really sells anything either. I'd be looking for a mild-medium cam, something that doesn't require a whole lot of mods. I'd have to figure out where I can get a cam first though...
xtremerevolution
Bump. I'd like to get a moderate cam. From what I saw, it shouldn't be too hard or too expensive to install new valve springs, pushrods, and sprint retainers. However, I am still trying to figure out where I could get a cam like that. Update: my mechanic wants $660 to do it (says its an 11 hour job). I'm not really sure if its worth it in that case...

Pulling the motor isn't that difficult IMO. and then putting in the cam I don't know how hard that is, I've never done one....but im sure it isn't *that* hard

If it takes a mechanic 11 hours to do, it would also take me a hell of a long time to do. If someone around here wanted to do it for me, I'd be more than glad to pay them. chadz34
There are people that do engine swaps in parking lots. The 3800 cam, could be done in less than 11 hours, that seems pretty high to me....just my two cents.
Euro
Everybody that I know who've put cams in the 3800 said it was a bitch and they'd never do it again if that helps
19Cutlass94
putting a cam in is very easy... its just getting to that point to put it in. unless you wanna drill a hole in your car then you dont have to take the engine out

Isn't there anyone here who I could pay to do it? Come on people. $25 an hour to help me do the job, cash. And I'll take you out to lunch too. $250 minimum, even if you do it in 5 hours. I'll even help you do it. I would imagine $250 is a nice day's paycheck.
19Cutlass94
Taking an engine out is NOT that hard. If a 3400swap and be done in a weekend, you could do a cam swap in a day!
xtremerevolution
Taking an engine out is NOT that hard. If a 3400swap and be done in a weekend, you could do a cam swap in a day! I'm sure I could. But that requires me to do something I've never done before, with tools I don't have. All I have is your basic mechanic's tools. Don't have an engine lift, and whatever else I need to get that cam out. That, and I can't screw anything up because I need the car to drive the next day. I simply don't want to do this alone. Seriously, anyone inside Chicago or Chicago's suburbs will get a nice wad of cash if they can help me get this job done on my car at their garage. xtremerevolution
I just checked over at bonnevilleclub.com. Some guy had told me that I'll need a low-lift high duration custom grind cam. "You will either need to ditch the 1.8's or get a low-lift high-duration custom grind. Combined lift on a performance cam coupled with high-ratio rockers will be uber-bad. Boom bad. I also have 1.8 rockers, and with my ported heads, my car is begging for more flow to fill the cavernous ports. I'll satisfy it's needs eventually with a custom ground cam that only increases duration, not lift." I suppose I'll need a custom grind cam for my car... On a side note, how much power should I expect to be pushing with a moderate cam? Any estimations on expected quarter mile times/trap speeds?
