Recommended Posts

Howdy,

Just last week I purchesd a 92 Lumina Z34 in mint condition, all stock, minus the catilytic converter, so its straight piped.

Does anyone have any suggestions for performance upgrades, and suggestions on how to install em?

Im thinking of doing a new air intake system, yet have no idea on how to go about doing that.

Search around the forum and you will see many suggestions, a K&N drop in is an excellent place to start and you can always purchase an intake from http://www.mandsproduction.com and an underdrive pulley as well would be a good idea. You could invest in a poly dogbone engine mount also to ensure all of that power gets to the ground most efficiently. You could also find a chip for your Z34 that should be good for at least a few ponies and you can set your own rev limiter and top speed.

Mostly welcome and enjoy your stay.

Welcome aboard. Like SmokesGTP stated, the Search function above will be your greatest friend.

Take full advantage of it, since there tons of archive threads on this board; however, don't be afraid to ask.

What do you want out of your new Z? Power? Handling? Overall apperance?

Start with clearing the slate and get a good, full tune-up. You want to get a ground zero start.

* change all fluids, no matter what the previous owner stated

* change plugs / wires

* clean throttle body / upper intake

* check Timing Belt (procedure found @ W-Body Performance - Tech Tips (Secondary Timing Belt))

* scan computer (OBDI) system if any trouble coes are showing

After, here's some of the basic you can pull off for power:

* hot / cold air-intake (custom build, order online, etc.)

* performance chip (Fast Forward Performance)

* poly dog-bone + underdrive crankshaft pulley (Fast Forward Performance)

* sky's the limit with a big wallet and some patience to learn / install

Best of luck with it... and most of all, have fun.

Thanks for the tips so far, the cars a 5speed, so Im gussing that

you can set your own rev limiter and top speed.

is only applicable to the automatics?

In response to Redfox340, Im hoping for power and overall appearnce improvements. Which mods would give me the most bang for the buck? I know that K&N air filters usualy are the best bet, is it possible to include one of those on a custom intake system? Would a hot or cold air intake be the best bet? And finaly, how would one go about cleaning the throttle body/upper intake?

No, rev limiters and top speed commands can be altered on both transaxles.

There's different code (in the programing) between auto's and manual's

* You're getting a 5-speed? :shock: You lucky bastard!!! :D *

As for the bang for the buck, you'll have to make that choice depending on finaces and personal experience.

From word and hand, you'll love the performance chip everything else from FFP. Good place to start.

As for the intake, you'll want to go "cold", to achieve that you'll need to relocate the battery.

There's been topics on that and can be found; many stash they power supply in the trunk.

And as for the throttle body: check W-Body Performance, and head for Tech Tips. It's easly found on that main page.

Best of luck!!!

As said previously, the best route to take BEFORE you mod your car is to make sure it's running in top notch condition.

BEFORE YOU MOD

---------------------

Change oil, oil filter.

Change tranny fluid, filter, gasket.

Flush radiator.

Change fuel filter.

Change sparkplugs with AC Delco plugs.

Change plug wires.

Change PVC valve.

Change air filter.

Run GM Top Engine cleaner through motor[Can get from GM dealer].

MODS

-------

01) I HIGHLY suggest that you get a billet aluminum w/polyurethane bushings motormount from http://www.fastfwdperformance.com. Your stock steel one is prone to breaking in half [has happened] and is ugly and weak. The aluminum one is MUCH stronger, looks better, and will help your transfer all your power to the ground more efficiently.

02) You can get the underdrive pully from http://www.fastfwdperformance.com. Since you have a 5-speed, you will feel a noticable change in your revs, and get quicker responces from your motor, especially on top end.

03) Custom intake from http://www.mandsproduction.com will help your motor breath better by getting rid of the restrictive stock intake. Also makes your moto a little louder and sounds cool.

04) If your car doesn't already have a new exhaust system, a 2.5" cat-back exhaust is the usual upgrade. I would also suggest getting a high-flow 2.5" CarSound cat from http://www.mandsproduction.com. It's high flow [outflows Random Tech, Catco,Dynomax] and federal laws requires it. You can also get any kind of muffler you like, Magnaflow and Dynomax are the suggested companys to look at.

05) A chip from http://www.fastfwdperformance.com will also give you a noticable power increase.

Remember, have fun with your car.

Just check the sig....

and id say they helped, considering i am the fastest N/A Lumina Z34

You aren't the fastest NA Z34 aaron. Maybe the only one who has posted a time...but thats about it.

Since you have a 5 speed, I would suggest removing the accumulator from the clutch hydraulics system. There is a writeup somewhere...hopefully someone has the link for it.
