Detent "Kickdown" Cable replacement

Mach 5

Recommended Posts

Jarek, you need to unbolt the cable from the transaxle, then pull the cable up and slide it off of the hook that's inside the trans. I'll edit this post with a picture of transaxle end of a detent cable in just a minute. I have the one off my TGP sitting in my closet right beside the computer.

Matt is correct. When I unhooked mine I found it was much easier to pull far enough out of the trans with the other end (throttle body) disconnected. with yours broken it should already be disconnected. All the end in the trans is is a cable bent 90 degrees and it hooks to a rod with a hole in it inside the trans.

That's how the transaxle end looks, that little eyelet or whatever you wanna call it is what slips over the little hook in the transaxle. Slide off the old cable while holding the transaxle linkage and then slip your new cable eyelet over it, then bolt it down, and adjust the tv cable.

Here's the basic adjustment procedure. If you do it like shown(step 4. B), it will usually shift a little high(mine is always about ~200rpms high on the initial adjustment, but yours could be different), so you'll have to adjust, test drive, then readjust to get it where you want it.

I don't think parts stores carry detent cables for our vehicles...the last time I needed one, I got it from a junkyard. I happened upon one that was in like-new condition out of a '90 GP that had a service replacement transaxle in it.
