constant brake noise

What is it that causes the brakes of almost every car to constantly make noise when they are not applied? They don't make this noise rolling off the lot new but just a few years down the road they do. Is there any way to fix this? Doesn't seem to have any impact on the ability to stop but it is a nuiscience.

Last time I had that problem, it ended up being those clips that attach to the caliper bracket rubbing against the rotor. I replaced them when I replaced the brake pads and the noise went away.

either this or a bent dust shield.

Neither cases. The noise is not very loud but definately annoying.

it really just sounds like the wear plate, but the wear plate is never rubbing. I'm confused that every other car that passes down the street gives off this sound, yet nobody here really seems to understand the sound that I speak of :dunno:. I've had quite a handful of people address me with this concern on their car (and all of mine and my family's) yet I can never really pinpoint the reason behind the noise. Personally, I've just learned to deal with it, but some of my friends have cars (one a impala and the other a cavilier, both 2003) and have owned them since new and are definately unhappy with the situation.

I usually just replace the brake pads and basically every other maintenance replaceable part on the brakes when I get those noises and they usually go away. I also make sure to lubricate whatever parts I need to around the brake calipers. I've never run into any problem like this that didn't go away once I looked through the brake system. Then again, I usually take off the caliper, spray it down with a generous amount of brake cleaner, pressure wash it down and re-grease it. Last time, I also painted my rear calipers with high heat aluminum paint.

yeah my workvan (2007 ford freestar) is making a lot of brake noise now..... but i drive it hard... real hard..

30K kilometers since mid september last year..... about a month ago it started making noise randomly... mostly in the morning when the dew is around...... but now its getting quite often.......

my girlfriends car 92 civic cx.. just had its brakes replaced.... within 100km it started with the brake noise.... in that case i believe it is inferior brake materials...... i think whatever they made the pads out of is probably to blame

I'm selling my front rotors soon (once I get the drilled rotors installed on Wednesday). They have 20,000 miles on them and they haven't been abused. No warping whatsoever. PM me if you're interested.

Good luck. Let me know what you go with, since EBC managed to screw up my order when I tried with them. My PowerStop rotors arrive tomorrow, so I'll let you know how those go.
