mdelorie
A guy at a local wrecker here has offered me "everything you'd need to do the swap," clutches, flywheel, transmission (284 - out of a 3.4 cutlass with a dead clutch), linkage, shifter, pedals, axles - for $1000. This guy is kind of notoriously expensive anyways, but I figured I'd run that price by here and see what kind of thoughts everyone might have on that. thanks! chadz34
From what I heard thats not too bad. 5 speed swaps are getting popular around here lately haha.
Psych0matt
that isnt too bad if it is in fact everything you need, just with a bad clutch, considering it is a 284. just beware that if that busts, it will be a ton more to have it rebuilt
mdelorie
I'd definitely be getting a new clutch. The guy said I could use the old clutch as a core.

Although I'm sure with enough money...
White93z34
eeeeh. I bought 2 284s, and enough parts to do one and a half swaps including a brand new clutch set for $600ish
Andrew
seems a bit high, but if its all there i would get it just to make life easy. and i believe the 284 has to be sent in to Getrag to be serviced/rebuilt.
mdelorie
Well, I'm not exactly sure it's a 284. As far as I recall, 284s came in the Ws, and the 282s were available in the J bodys like the Z24. Correct?
White93z34
284s came ONLY in 1991-1993 Grand Prix, Lumina Z34s, and Cutlass Supremes with the 3.4 282s came in a whole mess of different cars, including the w-body.
mdelorie
well, provided that this 284 is in good shape (which I guess I don't really have any way of knowing)... I shouldn't have to rebuild it. And if the 284 is a stronger transmission to start with, it should have no trouble running mated to my poor old 3.1, correct? GutlessSupreme
shouldn't be a problem, but the gear ratios won't exactly make the 3.1 any zippier.
TGP5sp90
Now, if thats already taken out of the car that price would be OK, but if thats you pullin it seems to high. It took me myself 3 days at 4 hours a day to pull a 282 and it cost me for evrything 250.00, so paying someone to have done it for me prolly would have even out. White93z34
just be sure you get EVERYTHING, i cannot stress how many small and seemingly unimportant parts there are.
mdelorie
Yeah, it would be completely pulled from the donor cars for me. And I think the $1000 would be a running agreement for anything else I might need if it isn't included.
