Hard to kill 4t60e

Lets see if you guys can figure this out. When my 93 cutlass 3.1 hit 186k it started having problems going into any gear when it was cold so I changed filter and fluid and the problem seem fixed. Then one day I left a stop sign and the car shuddered really bad until it shifted into second. I unplugged the TCC and that got rid of the shudder but I only had second and third gear. So I tore the tranny apart and changed the TCC solenoid. Well that got rid of the shudder but now first gear is completely gone and overdrive works only when it wants too. Reverse also shudders really bad. Oh yeah when I initially changed fluid there were pieces of what looked like metal o-rings in the pan. The car is now over 200k and I still drive it 70 miles a day 5 days a week waiting for this thing to grenade. I'm gonna be changing the tranny but I can't understand what is keeping this thing going.

GM TRANNY FTW!!!!! EVEN WHEN FUBARed... THEY STILL GO!!!!

I would start looking for a good used tranny, of do a full re-build and overhaul.

OR... get a used tranny, overhaul it, and wait... and wait... and wait... someday you will need it!!!

Back in 94 my buddies mom bought a brand spanking new white Z34. Car had 3 miles when they drove it off the lot and man oh man did we beat the holy crap out of that car neutral dropping, racing, smoking tires. You name it we raced it in that Z. Fast forward to 2000 when I found a nice looking white Z with 45,000 miles on it for 6 grand at a local dealer. I fell in love with that car remembering my buddies moms..........Until 3 months later when the tranny locked up and exploded at 70mph. Then one week after replacing the tranny I floored it from a stop and the motor died and wouldnt restart. You guessed it the timing belt broke and the valves smacked the pistons. I did a carfax and guess who the original owner was. Yup it was my buddies moms car the one that we drove to hell and back in. The cutlass I have now is the most reliable car I have ever owned and I'am the second owner. Just goes to show that if a car has been taken care of it should run forever.

Hmm...

Not sure what you're going to do with this one, but my recommendation is what Crazy K had suggested to me; get a beefy transmission cooler. That should considerably help your transmission.

a tranny cooler is always a good idea. 3 of my 8 (HEY I SOLD ONE!!!!!) cars have one, one is getting a manual tranny... one car is waiting to get chopped up... I have about 10 used coolers to pick from for the rest...

That is an awsome transmission. I had one like it, in a 1993 Lumina with 286,000mi.

286,000mi is where the trans finally let go, well, it let the differential pin go.

It had 1st gear on a very rare occasion, and 4th just slipped.

Other than that, I drove the car for almost a year with the trans that way.

It's engine still lives on in my Cutlass. 286,000 + whatever I can rack up now.

Later.
