Performance build on the cheap.. should I do it?

Right now, I have the chance to get this setup:

L67 longblock

.010" overbore (cleaning up the cylinder walls)

10.1:1 compression ratio

INTENSE S1X cam

Comp Cams 105 valve springs

Double-roller timing chain set (w/ balance shaft removal; required)

Balanced rotating assembly

Diamond coated forged pistons/pins/rings

L32 connecting rods

ARP head studs

ARP connecting rod bolts

Milled heads (-0.005)

3-angle valve job

.. for $700. My buddy bought a GTO and doesn't want any of his old GTP parts around, and wants to give them to me at a substantial discount. I have the build sheet right in front of me from the performance shop. The machine work was $2130.02 alone. If I buy this setup, I will DEFINITELY be intercooling the car. The compression ratio is too high for running a hot M90. The performance parts total $2040. The engine hasn't been run for over a year and a half.

So, regardless of how good this deal is, $700 is a lot of money. I want a nice high-performance build and this looks like it just might fit the bill. If you were in my position, would you do it?

That's what I was thinking. I don't know, I just have to be told to do something, even if I think it's a good idea.

The engine WAS overheated, blowing the headgaskets, but I'm going to have it all looked over by a machine shop. The only thing I'm even a little iffy about are the heads. I doubt there's anything wrong with them, but it's always good to play it safe.

Yeah I'd say get it. But before, I'd go inspect it yourself just to satisfy that little voice that I'm sure is in your head about the overheating issue it had. Sounds like a rather good deal to me. Even if the heads are bad, couldn't you just swap your existing heads?

i would definitely get it, but i agree it will need to be intercooled. You may also look into getting the Mezeire water pump for better cooling. Also, i would swap out those LS1 springs right away.

Its maximum rated lift is ~.500 and it does not have any more seat pressure than a stock 3800 valve spring. If you use it with stock 3800 retainers, the maximum lift drops to .420 (1.9 rockers bring the lift to .490). This spring should not be considered for use in our market.

Anyone using stock retainers with these springs can expect the spring to fail, using LS1 retainers and you have the same valve float protection as your stock springs.

Yep! I'll be grabbing a GP GT tranny out of the junkyard and rebuilding that, putting my HD parts in it.

Thanks for that heads up about the springs! This engine was assembled back in '04 when the LS1 springs were hot shit. I'll be getting LS6 springs.

I'll start piecing together the build now and drop it in come spring.

hopefully they are the 105# springs. the 130# springs wear out the tensioner quicker due to their higher seat pressure. but the engine in question does have the double roller set which is necessary for the 130# springs.

you should make sure he used aftermarket retainers too.

:( I wish it was a Gen-V. It's just a brand new M90 the last owner had put on.

I'm sourcing a Gen-V for this build. I'm sick of the Gen-III POS.

 sweet. ya, you may as well do it while its out and everything. bah, may as well go M112
