xtremerevolution
I'm going to start a slight maintenance/performance project some time soon, and I figured I'd tell you guys about it. Here's what I'm going for. I'm looking to get a bit more performance. I'd definitely like to break into the 15's in the quarter, but I don't want to do an engine swap yet. I'll wait till i finish college for that. So here's what I'm looking at: FelPro Gaskets for: Throttle Body LIM Valve Covers Roller Rockers: https://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/products1.php?id=606&catid=104 Everything's been ordered already. FelPro Gaskets were $57 shipped for the Throttle Body, Intake Manifold, and Valve Covers. If you guys want, I can take pictures. I'll probably get a dyno of the engine after all the work is done so you guys can finally see the torque curve on an S1 3800. That 15-20 extra horsepower should be quite noticeable. 1990lumina
Dyno it before and after
xtremerevolution
Dyno it before and after If a dyno didn't cost me a day's worth of work, I probably would...
slick
Sadly, the 20hp gain would probably only be had with a cumulation of other parts. BTW, I'm moving this from Brakes and Suspension to the Powertrain section.

BTW, I'm moving this from Brakes and Suspension to the Powertrain section. Probably? They're advertised to give 15HP off the bat alone. I'm sure they'd provide a greater benefit combined with a cam, but I don't have that option right now.
slick
Yeah, the mod should be pretty noticeable, but 15hp is quite a bit.
MonteCarloDude
Yeah, the mod should be pretty noticeable, but 15hp is quite a bit. argeed, i was thinking somewhere between 8 to 10 HP.
digitaloutsider
Yeah, I'd estimate 10-15 at the most. The engine is pretty anemic to begin with.
xtremerevolution
Yeah, I'd estimate 10-15 at the most. The engine is pretty anemic to begin with. Hmm... I'll have to call ZZP and get their own specs on what the performance predictions would be. If its 10-15 and not 15-20 as advertised, they'd be doing a lot of false advertising. I don't exactly consider ZZP a company who would be doing that kind of a thing. Either way, I'll let you guys know how my car runs after they're installed. DiscoStudd
One word for you, dude: NITROUS! The L27 can easily handle a 75 horse shot. I was kicking around the idea of strapping this kit onto my Regal: http://www.nitrousexpress.com/Pages/GMStage1.htm Honestly, with all of the cheap plentiful L36's and L67's out there along with their huge aftermarket, I wouldn't even bother trying to beef up an L27. For the same money you'd drop on what you have planned, you could score a low-mileage L36 and have an extra 30 HP and 10 lb/ft right out of the box. The L36's that were in the 95 H-Bodies ran on the same OBD 1.5 PCM that your L27 runs on (the wiring was the same as well.) I've been told that it's relatively easy to swap the L27 out for an L36 and get it to run on the 95 L27's PCM. http://www.motorswap.org is where I got my info... Will my same AC system and compressor fit on an L36? I was thinking about doing something like that for a while, but I figured if I was going to do a swap, I might as well swap an L67. I don't have a garage, or the tools to do a full engine swap. I'd have to take it and get it done somewhere else. My mom replaced my A/C compressor last summer. That, and I just rebuilt my transmission 8,000 miles ago. If I did a swap now, a lot of that money would go to waste. I'd much rather get an L27 on roller rockers, new gaskets, and nitrous. I've also been kicking around the idea of a nitrous system. I'm thinking of going with a 50 shot for now though. I just needed to find a kit that I could use. I bookmarked the kit you sent me. I still think the L27 has some potential. That engine was practically made to take abuse for a long long time. I'd like to have it long enough to prove that a S1 3800 can last past 200,000 miles with weekly drag racing and WOT runs and still stay in good condition. My next mod after this will be a heavy duty transmission cooler. I'll order the Nitrous kit after that.
DiscoStudd
I'm 95% sure the AC compressor will bolt up to a Series II. I've done quite a bit of poking around at http://www.motorswap.org (formerly l67swap.com) and they've always recommended leaving your compressor in the car to keep the system sealed when you swap out your engine... I'll do a swap next summer for sure after I graduate and get myself a decent job. For now though, I'll stick with the L27. It's great to know the compressor will bolt onto a series 2. However, I figure if I just did a tranny rebuild and already bought the gaskets and rockers, I might as well use this engine for a little while longer. With the rockers and mods I currently have I doubt I'll notice too much of a difference going to a stock L36.
