ok so heres the deal i want power and with reading about the LQ1 i have come to learn that this would prob be the best engine i could get not for the tuneing or the easy access to aftermarket parts but for power in general. this engine was suposed to make big power when first designed but GM had to cut that all down because the tranny couldent take it. anyone know of a way to bring the originally desined power for this engine back out? and would it be possible to match a stronger tranny to this engine that COULD handle the power?

Posted

well i know that but theres gotta be someway and things that i can do to bring that power back

I think if it was possible a lot more people would have done it already. Probably has to do with replacing internal pieces in the motor at aren't available to buy.

i have been thinking about getting an xtra 3.4 and completly rebuilding it so whiles its torn down why not try and find these parts and put them back in and unleash the 3.4L main thing i guess would be the tranny? can i fit a stronger one on?

The 4T65-E HD tranny is what they've been putting behind L67's for years, and it's what's currently behind the LS4 V8 in the Impala SS and GP GXP. There's plenty of aftermarket for beefing those trannies even further.

They also sell an aftermarket "HD" version of the 4T60-E (what's in your car now) but it costs north of $3K...

right now i have the stock 4T60-E and its starting to slip a lil or so i think so a new tranny would be nice but would it fit?

how much do you have to spend???? This is going to needlessly expensive. 3.4 is a fairly powerful engine for the time period it was buiit

yeah wlel right now not alota cash is in my pocket but im pretty much just trying to set up a plan as to what and how im gona do it and how much im gonna need

Posted

anything that involves power involves money. if you wanna go fast its gonna cost you plan and simple. Id start with something you CAN do instead of thinking of things that cost $5,000+

Posted

yeah iv already got all those thought out and im saving for them but if i could do this bring the engine back to what it was ORIGINALLY supposed to be at then mod that engine i think id be set for power

Posted

more than likely your going to pull the motor and work with internals. With N/A engines.. when they de-tune it, its the motor not the tune its self

Posted

yeah i kinda figured that hense the thought of finding another LQ1 and using that as my rebuild and keeping the one i got now in the car so i can still drive the car while im rebuilding

Posted

well youll need a 3.4 from a jy youll need to overhaul it, and youll need custom parts made as well as machine shop work. Even at that Im willing to bet your gonna spend more than $2,000

Posted

yeah i kinda figured somewhere around that were the GM original specs ever relesed? or anyone ever know of what was in it before they had to detune it?

Posted

the original design had better flowing heads and intakes as well as some cam differences (and tuning differences, of course) i think. there is a lot of power to gain just by doing head and intake work. cant remember what year yours is, but i would do an obd2 swap, if its not already, as well as built 282 or 65e-hd or build your stock tranny (or just wait till it blows).

that sounds more like it and no i have the original OBD1. how hard would it be to do the OBD2 swap? i know cars and i understand how they work but have never really worked on them and im looking to become a mechanic's apprentice

You and me both! I start school next Tuesday to be an Automotive Service Technician. Can't wait!

obd2 swap isnt too hard. theres a few topics on 60degree about it, including one from stevasycho. personally, from what ive seen, i would go w/ the apprentice thing like youre thinking about. school is great if you wanna be a fabricator or body man, like everyone else wants.

16 pounds boost thru a t4 turbo and a lower compression lq1 (say 8.6:1) would get the engine to move a little better.

naw, 3.4s are junk.....;)

My school is an apprenticeship thing too..I'm just doing the school part now and the practical hours later.

thats cool. my dad talked to some recent wyotech grads and all of them wanted to be custom fabricators, not techs. thats 30 grand for all school and not much hands-on mechanical repair
