Clarke33
I went ahead and pulled the distributor drive today to replace the O-ring. The old one is still intact but is so hard it feels like a piece of hard plastic. It was no trouble at all to remove but I did notice there is approximately a 1 inch section of the lower intake gasket bulging out about 3/16 of an inch. I don't want to replace any more than I have to but is this something that should be replaced at this time?
ManicMechanic
If it's running good and not leaking, I wouldn't worry about it for now.
stockgp
are you sure it's not rtv sealant that pressed out the side?
Clarke33
I'll check it tomorrow to see if it is sealant or a gasket. There was so much oil around the dist drive I couldn't tell if it is leaking from there also. The car runs great but I assuming even if the LIM is leaking it would be much less than the o-ring problem.
1990lumina
If your engine was anything like my 3.1 it's probably sealant pushed out. My Lumina's motor had huge goobs of sealant budging out in some areas..I never really cared to do anything about it though, I figured more is better then less. Clarke33
Sounds as if I should leave it alone. I didn't really want to replace the LIM gasket anyway.
EFFENDI
how much was it leaking out of the o-ring? when my engine runs it pours off of the back of the transmission... like someone turned the faucet on.... does that sound similar to your problem? i'm hoping that is the issue as it sounds pretty easy to fix
rockfangd
i have been waiting to do mine as mine has leaked since day one
Clarke33
Mine was leaking like a sieve. Mine also ran down the oil pan and the tranny pan. After running the engine and then letting it sit for a couple of days, there was a puddle of oil under it that was about 24" in diameter. The Distributor drive isn't hard to get out. I had mine out in about 45 minutes and I was just taking my time looking at everything under the hood since I had just bought. I don't have it back together yet because I am changing all belts, hoses, filters, fluids, plugs, wires, etc. I'll have time this weekend to finish the project and I'll let Y'all know if the o-ring took care of all the oil leaking.
