cutty
Well today i was driving around picking up a few things. When i noticed that the engine temp was going a lot higher then normal, i thought nothing of it. Until i got home and looked under the hood to see what was wrong. First thing i saw was that the coolant reservoir was empty, i was hoping it wasn't true, but then i checked the oil level and saw that it was milky. Then i took the oil cap off to verify, and yes there is coolant in the oil. DAMMIT!!!! Oh well not that bad for having 135,XXX miles and being 12yrs old. I can get it fixed at my work for about $600. I would do it myself but living in an apt, on a one way street sucks, plus i need the car since my wife doesn't have one. Damn what a shitty day for being my first day off in 7days. Stevo
Ahhhh the wonderful world of GM and Gaskets. All the cars I called with suspicion of 3100 engines I asked right off... "What engine is in this car?" When they said 3.1 I knew 'tis screwed' and said thanks, goodbye. Had one once ... will never again.
ihateallmustangs
My 3.1 has over 350,000k and still has original gaskets. MPFI that is

All you have to do is check it and see if it's got milky coolant... my 3100 ran just fine through it's entire time with me. I did put the 3400 intakes on so it did get new intake gaskets, but there wasn't any evidence that it would have happened anytime soon. DOHCRagtopguy
Ahhhh the wonderful world of GM and Gaskets. All the cars I called with suspicion of 3100 engines I asked right off... "What engine is in this car?" When they said 3.1 I knew 'tis screwed' and said thanks, goodbye. Had one once ... will never again. My 92 Z-24 Cavalier had a 3.1 MPFI engine in it and ran like a top with absolutely no gasket problems up to when I sold it with 195K miles on it. I think for every bad one, there is one out there that is just as good. But the factory GM intake gaskets, the hard plastic ones I mean, are really junk. I prefer Fel-Pros the best, that's what is in my Cutty's LQ-1.
cutty
yeah i will definitely be using fel-pro gaskets

Just hope that coolant did not get to the bearings. I've heard tell that if that does happen, the motor will be toast very soon no matter what you do. joey b
I had set up for one of my friends to buy my other's GP with trashed gaskets. He had driven it for miles and added Barr's Leak to it. My friend who bought it took the heads off and had them cleaned. Put it back together and the car, despite some massive lifter tick, has been running strong for 4 years and about 40K miles.
