Newbie that needs help?

90prix3.1

Recommended Posts

I'm new here and need some help,? I have a90 grand prix with a 3.1 in it, and I'm having all kinds of trouble, first off when I start the car it barely wants to start then sometimes it will idle up to 2000 rpms stay there and die down to about 1100rpms? When I give it gas from an idle it will die way down almost stall then pick up? It has a newer fuel pump, filter, and a new tps sensor, what could it be? Another thing is it won't go above 4000 rpms, it sounds like it is hitting the rev limiter, but at 4000 rpms? Before the battery went dead it would normally hit the rev limiter at 6000 rpms? Then I will be driving come to a stop and the car will sometimes stall? You guys have any ideas what this could be?? I would appreciate any help you guys could give me! Thanks in advance!

In neutral or park, there is a 4K rpm rev limiter, so that is normal. Now, are gettin an SES light?? To me, the idling high when you start it, sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere. If it is at a sensor, then you will get a code. If not, it will just run bad. The plenum is a common place for a vacuum leak on the 3.1L

I dont wana sound stupid but what is a ses light?

I've had the codes checked and all it gives me a code for a low tps voltage, but I've checked it cleaned the connection and it still gives me the same code?

The SES light is that orange light that comes on that says "Service Engnie Soon". You said you replaced the TPS sensor and still says low voltage?? Thats is wierd. Have you followed the TPS wires to the ECM?? On of those could be ground it out or something. Your problem still sounds like a vacuum leak

take the IAC out of the throttle body(located on the opposite side of the TPS sensor) and clean it, also, if you have a repair manual to reference, check and see what length the IAC(idle air control valve) pintle supposed to be..it could be stuck or just be dirty/bad, it will cause high idle and tendency to stall or wanna stall "off idle" when you hit the gas also...it controls the amount of air that is let into the engine when your foot is off the accelerator and the throttle plate is closed.....cleaning the throttle body wouldn't hurt also...if your "pcv" valve on the rear valve cover is bad/hasn't been replaced in a long time, I'd suggest replacing it also(it's like a $3 part at most), it will allow oil to be ingested into your intake/throttle body/motor and the oil build up might be keeping your throttle plate from fully shutting...Just an idea. Hope this helps!
