Euro Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 I'm in desperate need of new rear brakes(55k miles and they've developed a nice grinding sound! ), but are unsure of what rotors to choose. I did front pads and rotors a couple months ago already, and went with Bendix for both. Now, they work pretty well(for $100 a rotor they fucking should), however the outer edges and middle developed surface rust a good like 2-3 weeks after we put them on. Now, for such an expensive rotor, shouldn't you think that they'd do something to at least prolong the cosmetic life of the rotor? The 55k mile rear rotors on the car now don't have a spec of surface rust on them either, which is surprising. Now, I REALLY do NOT want to spend that for the rears again, especially if they're going to look like hell in a few weeks anyways. I found some Raybestos rotors for half the price, which are still a good brand right? I'm really leaning towards these (since they're cheaper...) and they've seemed to have gotten pretty nice reviews from what I could find. I'm not trying to seem like I'm being a cheap ass here, especially on something so vital to the car. What rotors have you Gen 2(or 1) guys used? Quote
Nick1234 Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Is there something you can buy to put on the rotor to keep if from rusting? Quote
Euro Posted August 13, 2007 Author Report Posted August 13, 2007 That's what I'm not sure of. I'm sure there is. If it's paint or some kind of sealer. Quote
pwmin Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 they dont care if they get surface rust, just as long as they work, so youre not going to find anything that will not rust like that unless theyre treated w/ something (i forget what they use). you should be able to get some a/m treated ones for less than 100 a piece you can always paint the hat of the rotor, but theres not much you can do for the outside unless you paint where the pads dont touch w/ a brush or something. Euro Posted August 13, 2007 Author Report Posted August 13, 2007 Ok yeah that's what I was thinking. I mean, the MAIN reason why I was asking about rotors was the price. I really didn't want to pay $200 in rotors again since then it will wipe me out with school starting. So, I'm going with little cheaper rotors with the Bendix pads. I know they won't last as long as the Bendix rotors, but it's the rear brakes and I've got the best stuff up front. And if I have to have new rotors next spring/summer oh well shit happens. Driving around with these brakes are like nails on a chalkboard. Driving me insane. I'm doing them tomorrow after work. Thanks Paul! Quote
pwmin Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 no prob. yeah, the cheaper rotors are more prone to warping, but i used them when i did the f&r brake upgrades on the 91 since im planning on getting good stuff when i can. i havent had too many problems w/ wearever rotors. Quote
Euro Posted August 13, 2007 Author Report Posted August 13, 2007 Yeah the rotors I'm going with are the Wearevers Quote
Brian P Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 pepboys prostop gold (or platinum?) rotors have a black and zinc coating on the hat of the rotor. Made in Taiwan. Bean n Cheese. Quote
SigEpCutlass Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 I have Bendix on the front and some Wearever equivalent on the rear. The Bendix are definitely in better shape after 40k+ miles than the rears. Just my experience though... Quote
1990lumina Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 The rotors I bought from Mazda for myMillenia are coated in zinc..the ones I took off with 106k miles on them didn't have any rust everywhere..I hope these ones hold up just as well....try and find something with a zinc coating or something equilvalent. runt Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Yeah, thats a good choice. You would probably be OK with some quick paint on 'em. My left rear is squawking quite a bit as well, but they are in really good shape yet so I gotta figure out what is wrong. Quote

My sister car does that quite a bit..I take it apart and clean everything off with brake cleaner and it goes away for a few months..then comes back lol..my Dad was always told it was brake dust causing the sweaking..so I dunno! Euro Posted August 13, 2007 Author Report Posted August 13, 2007 Get some of that "Disc Brake Quiet" goop(red colored) that helps get rid of the squeal. Quote
pwmin Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Get some of that "Disc Brake Quiet" goop(red colored) that helps get rid of the squeal. thats what i always use. having shims, chamfers, and a space in the middle helps w/ squeaking, too. Quote

I used Disc Brake Quiet on every thing when I put it back together..like I said evrything seems to be fine for a few months then sqweaky time again lol..probably pootly designed system..most Taurus of that era have rear drums..ours has discs lol.. My Millenia has a a bunch of shims on the pads...I goobed that shit on (I use the blue stuff, but it's rpobably the same) and it turns black after I think because it all melted from the heat and turned black haha.. 5speedz34 Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 I haven't read anything but pretty much rotors are rotors if your just looking for stock replacement. Especially the rears. Just get something thats decent. As for making sure you can get them off again, coat the inside of the hat in anti-sieze. Quote
