Pabz
I am in the middle of this 3400 swap. Here is some info: 3400 - from an 2002 Grand Am going into a 90 cutlass supreme convertible. ECM and harness from a 3.1 MPFI 5-speed I have searched the forum but still I have a few questions. Keep in mind I just want to get this running, soon. 1) Injectors Can I wire up the 3400 injectors to my 3.1 Harness? If not which injectors should I use? EDIT: I used the injectors out of a junked lumina with a 3100 2) Fuel lines Since I will be using the 3400 fuel rail, what size for the fuel line disconnect tool will i need? 3/8" or 5/16"? EDIT: I used the fuel lines from the junked 3100, I needed both fuel line disconnect tools 3/8" and 5/16". I also cut the nylon tubing off the quick disconnect fuel lines from the 3100 and attached them to the existing fuel tubing in the cutlass, fit like a glove. Now my cutlass has the quick disconnect fuel lines 3) Throttle Cable The existing cable in the 90 cutlass will not work. I plan to get a throttle cable from a 96 Grand Prix with a 3100. Will this work with the linkage on the 3400 TB? EDIT: I got the throttle cable from a 96 grand prix with the 3100 and used the internals from the 3100 throttle body as per 3400swap guide. Will this work with the linkage on the 3400 TB? Get the throttle linkage off of the 3100 TB as well. I had to swap linkages between the 3100 and 3400 TB's when I did the 3400 intake swap. I do not have a 3100 TB, i might have to get one from a junk yard, what years 3100 tb's will work? all years?
Pabz
1) Injectors Can I wire up the 3400 injectors to my 3.1 Harness? If not which injectors should I use? Found some info on another site Multec 2 injectors that are used on 00+ 3X00 engines have compatibility issues with your stock ECM, and will run your engine *excessively* rich. Your old injectors fit on the new fuel rail without any problems, so use them.
Pabz
Holy crap is it ever a PITA to bolt up the tranny, its not complicated just heavy and awkward. I found my pressure plate bolts and got the clutch installed. One question though, while i was mounting the tranny, a little wire type spring fell out. Not sure if it belonged to the 282. It has a wierd shape. I tried drawing it below, anybody? Other than that I have to finish the wiring. Someone cut all the wires to the ECM harness. So i have a big solder job ahead. Then it will be ready to drop into the cutlass. Other issues I came across were the upper engine to torque strut brackets. They have to come off the 3100. the old 3.1 MPFI ones wont work. I do plan to use the alternator and bracket from the 3.1 MPFI though. I also removed the AC compressor and put an idler pulley in the closest bolt of the timing belt cover. Turns out the new length of serpentine belt needed is just over 60". I am using a 60" belt but the tensioner should sit a little lower. I will get a bigger belt when it needs to be replaced. I also had to replace the power steering pump with one from a 96 grand prix with 3100. I did use the bigger PS pump pulley from the 3.1MPFI though. Since I had the engine out, I also replaced the steering rack. I went out to buy the smaller starter for the 3400. Holy crap it was expensive $400 CAN. OUCH but as long as I can next week, all is good. I plan to take it to the exhaust shop when finished to get a dual catback done. I hope I have enough money. pwmin
dont remember seeing anything like that spring on my 284. itll be awesome once you get this done. so, you have everything figured out, its just mostly wiring from here? Pabz
ya, everything is figured out, just have to do the work. so far this has been a pretty smooth swap. If i didnt find that 3100 in the junk yard i would be screwed. I hope the 90 ECM will run the engine decently. I might get a chip from 60degreev6
White93z34
from what i understand a 3.4 DOHC chip can run a 3400 decently.
Bake82
from what i understand a 3.4 DOHC chip can run a 3400 decently. Pabz...if you need that DOHC I have a 5 spd chip here. I'll throw it into the package for an extra $10. Let me know in a PM!

SigEpCutlass
Nice work Pabz. I wish I had the time and enough skills to pull that off.
Pabz
I dropped the motor in and hooked everything up, I still have not tried cranking it. I got it towed to the exhaust shop yesterday. They will be installing 2.5" pipe, cat, resonator, back to 2 magnaflow mufflers with dual outputs on each. If he has them in stock I will be going with these. They will be installing the piping (y-pipe) right under the lateral links, is this common? Other than that, i have to order a new clutch master cylinder. (maybe slave too). I bled the clutch and it was still spongy afterwards with about only the last 2" of stiff pedal feel. The next day i pushed the clutch in and nothing. When i was putting the clutch in the piston came out of the master cylinder, which leads me to believe this is where it is failing. It still needs an alignment for the new steering rack and the poly inserts for the dogbones.

Pabz
Well. I got everything done, I cranked it up yesterday and it ran nice, there might be an exhaust leak on the custom downpipe. Other than that my Clutch sucks, probably got an air leak in the hydraulic line. I replaced both master and slave cylinders. When bleeding the master cylinder, air kept on comming out of the line, i could hear a gushing sound like it was sucking in air. I checked the hose and found a patch had been done to it before. How do you guys think i can fix it?

Pabz
I found these on a jeep 4x4 site, looks very similar to the fittings i need.
Pabz
Well, after about 5 weeks i got it done. I went to a hose and fitting vendor, asked for a hydraulic line about 3/16 I.D. 500psi. He took my fittings went down the warehouse and grabbed a hose. Went to a sweet crimping machine and crimped the lines on there. Gives it to me and says "there u go, have a nice day". "Thats it" i asked. "Yep" he replied. Didn't pay a cent. Got the gf to help bleed the clutch. Absolutely no bubbles. Nice feel too. The hose does flex a bit, but then stays firm. I took it around the block, it would die on idle and when breaking. Got back home and did an idle relearn. Helped allot but it still dies once in a while when breaking to a stop. The 3100 injectors with the 3.1 ecm is probably not good enough. After the idle relearn it ran nice when moving. Damn 2nd gear pulls hard. Can't wait to get an alignment done. The engine sounds great, exhaust is super loud. The guy made a custom downpipe that may be leaking. It goes to a resonator, then to a Y-pipe then two magnaflows. Its figgin loud and I am sure that my neighbors are shaking their heads. I am gonna go back and ask him to add a Cat. I will grab some pics if you guys don't comment on how dirty it looks. My only concern was getting this done before winter. I will be detailing it in the weeks to come.
