cramez
Car is a 99 Grand Prix GT, 3800 auto, 100k on it. The car started shaking and shifting odd the other day and after a couple minutes triggered the ses light. The only code that was on it was "Torque converter solenoid stuck on" I'm used to my older 3-speed 3T40, and this is the newer 4-speed 4T65 if I remember right. Does the TCC fail in these like it's known to in the 3-speeds? Is it a pretty similar job to change?
Andrew
with only 100k that seems a little early, but its not unheard of. replacing the part should be a similar process.
digitaloutsider
As of now, I've lost two 4T65E's due to the exact same reason. Both under 100,000 miles. Try to get it swapped out as soon as possible. You might be able to save the tranny.
cramez
So the problem is definitely the TCC? This must operate slightly different than the one in the old 3-speeds, I drove that car in 2 rather than drive for almost six months and it never hurt anything, and that was almost 100k ago. This is the part I need then, correct? http://www.napaautoparts.com/masterpages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=ECH&PartNumber=TCS530&Description=Transmission+Control+Solenoid

cryptnix
and about a $300 job at any of the local shops in your area ... at least thats what i cost my lazy ass to get repaird
cramez
So it's basically the same job as the 3-speed, just pull the side pan off the trans and just change it out? Sounds like it shouldn't be too bad, hopefully. This car's getting expensive kinda quick, and it's only at 100k.

cramez
OK, this is getting annoying. I talked to my parts guy who used to work at a GM dealership and he claims that if it's not dying at stop signs it's probably not the TCC, it's probably the valve body sticking. Any suggestions on what I can do besides change the filter & fluid and see how long it lives? I definitely don't have the time to change the tranny right now if I can help it.
