DRGrocho
My 99 LTZ is making some fun clunking noises coming from the rear, and when you push on the back, you can hear the right rear strut gasping for air. So, I've decided that I'm going to replace the struts and strut mounts, but should I replace the springs as well? As far as replacing the springs go, any suggestions? On a quick look, it looks like the KYB GR-2's at performance center are a pretty good deal for struts.
Andrew
just a warning, rear struts are easy, but they take a while. on my GP, i had to remove the rear seat, rear deck cover, and seat belts just so i could get to the top strut plate bolts thru access holes in the rear deck. talk about irritating!! definitely replace those top strut plates too while you are there. its possible to get to those from inside the trunk if you have the right tools, but even then its very difficult to get the back nut. for springs, SSC springs from ZZP are the way to go IMO. you can't buy just rear springs, nor do i recommend lowering just the rear. Andrew
well actually i was wrong, you can get just the rear springs... weird. but they dont list the lumina as an option, so maybe they wont fit??
DRGrocho
Sorry, I've been gone for a couple days, but I'm still wondering if I need to replace the springs when I do the struts?
Regal_GS_1989
Replacing Rear struts in a lumina isnt all that bad. Took me maybe 2 hours start to finish the first time i did them. (Granted the car was on a hoist) The bolts to the mounting plate can all be accessed from inside the trunk. Also to answer your question, no, you don't need to replace the springs when you do the struts. Its advisable to change the mounts, but if they appear to still be in good shape, then you could re use them.
Andrew
i guess the Lumina has more room in the trunk than my GP. that good news for you!! anyway, dont replace the springs. i would definitely replace the mounts though.
