z34Phoenix
besides a 97 and harness.... what would it take to get a trany from my 98 GTP to work in my 96Z34... the 97 Z34 came with the 4t65e.... being that the gtp is a 4t65-hd. -the trany will deff bolt up. -controling the trany can be done with the 97 PCM and harness. issues i can think of are: - incompatable TQ converters? - needing diff axles (posible to make a hybrid of my current axles and the gtp's) -gearing diff gtp is 2.92 and my Z is 3.43 IIRC the gearing i can deal with. can always try and swap gearing? even go for higher gear... ok time for ideas.... digitaloutsider
Torque converters are different. Halfshafts are also different. The gearing will be terrible for the LQ1. Hell, it's terrible for the L67.
Andrew
you could get the non-hd which has 3.29 gears.
wickedbuick
I think you might be able to just swap the differential. That is the only real difference that make it "heavy duty" as far as I know. It shouldn't take more than three hours or so. By doing that, you wouldn't have the issue with the torque converter or halfshafts. Your gear ratio would be affected by what your final drive ratio is with the HD diff. You can count the teeth on your sun gears from both diffs. If the tooth count is the same, you should have the same ratio that you started out with. If you want to swap the whole tranny, the torque converter from the GTP might have a different stall speed. It might be a larger diameter too. I would either get a drilled flex plate to work with the GTP converter. Or find out the stall speed on the two converters and if they are the same or close, you can just use your stock converter and flexplate. As for axles, you would take the inner section from the GTP axles with the splined shaft goin into the trans and combine it with the outer section from your stock axles. Not sure how thats done, but everyone that swaps L67's in 1st gens do that. I didn't because I kept my stock trans. My converter was the smaller diameter, so I just got my flex plate drilled fro the L67 cause the holes lined up for the bigger converter. You can get a drilled flexplate from INTENSE for $40.
