GPdriver1986
Everytime I turn the key to the on position I hear the fuel pump, its kinda noisy, but when the engine is running I can't hear it unless I open the trunk. Is this normal, I know that most cars have noisy fuel pumps?
gmrulz4u
Yes, completely normal...the ECM commands the Fuel Pump Relay to "run" the pump for 2 seconds when the Key is turned to the ON position...you're supposed to hear a "whirrling" noise... GPdriver1986
I know that the ECM turns on the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel system but is the noise a sign that the fuel pump is wearing out?
phantomFE3
so thats what they noise is! yeah that happens when i start up my car too!! but it isnt very noisy when the car is running, i just thought it was the power antenna trying to go up, since mine is broken
GPdriver1986
So I guess I have nothing to worry about. I know GM fuel pumps are strong and reliable. On our 1996 Nissan Quest we had to replace the fuel pump at 150k km and before the Nissan we had a chevy corsica with 170k km on the original pump. mdelorie
235 on mine. Aren't they quite a bitch / hella expensive to replace?

Absolutely NOT! In fact, read any diagnostic manual, and they will tell you that Step 1 in determining a Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump Relay problem is making sure their IS a noticable "whirring" noise when the Key is turned to the ON position... No worries:)
Guest TurboSedan
235 on mine. Aren't they quite a bitch / hella expensive to replace? my stock fuel pump went out at 204,000 miles & hell yes they are a bitch to replace ecspecially if your tank is full of gas (like mine was). i broke my sending unit and had to put my new TGP fuel pump in with a broken sender. i have since gotten a new sender unit, and i'll be getting a Walbro 255. they really aren't that expensive...around $100 or so? my gas gauge always reads full now but i can tell when i'm about to run out because the fuel pump will make a loud whirring noise when coming to a stop (all of the gas flows to the front of tank away from pump). it's hard on the fuel pump but it's getting the Walbro soon anyway. Lee
All I hear when I turn the key on is my PMIII motor pumping up the brake system. Must be doing its job though. My car has now officially been in my possession for 6 full years.

Could be that your Fuel Pump Relay is "toast", your car will still Start and Run with no problems because it uses the Oil Pressure Switch as a back-up to the Fuel Pump Relay... You have to hear how truely loud the PowermasterIII accumulator vacuum motor can be. It's just on the otherside of the firewall. You get used to it and don't hear it most times. But it does drown out any other minor whirring noise. Plus the anti-loc soleniods all do thier little clicking thing.."bu-da-budirit!" You Regal/TGP guys know the sound.
