super_fro_daddy Posted July 15, 2007 Report Share Posted July 15, 2007 Well I decided to start on getting my 95 GP SE back on the road. It needs brakes (among other things). So I got pads and rotors. I CANNOT get the piston to slide back to get the new pads in on the rears (I haven't even got to the fronts yet). So does that mean its time for new calipers??? The car has been only driven less than 2 months in the year that I have owned it becuase it is my winter only vehicle and we had a pretty mild winter last year. Could that be the reason??? Thanks. 19Cutlass94 Posted July 15, 2007 Report Share Posted July 15, 2007 salt will do this to calipers, however have you tried to loosen the bleeder screw a tad, then try to push back the piston? ON the rears, you have to turn the pistion as your push them in. They do not just slide straight back. I would have thought that the piston would have slid with no problem after that. Is there something I am missing/not doing??? Whats PMIII mean?? 19Cutlass94 Posted July 15, 2007 Report Share Posted July 15, 2007 On the rear calipers, the piston needs to be turned and pushed in at the same time. if you just try to push it in without turning it, it will seem like a locked up caliper/piston. It still takes some effort to move the piston even with no pressure from the fluid. PMIII is powermaster 3, the brake unit that your car has. Robby1870 Posted July 15, 2007 Report Share Posted July 15, 2007 PMIII is the name of the ABS system. Are you rotating the rear caliper pistons as you push them? They screw in. You should see two small holes or indentions on the edge of the piston surface. The special tool (fits on the end of a 3/8" drive ratchet, will fit into these two holes and allow you to use a ratchet to screw the calipers in. This tool is a little cube thing made for different types of cars and is usually available at most parts stores for around $10. Prolly not the best way to do it, but whatever works. Actually I was doing that and it moved a bit but then I thought "naaahhh this can't be the way to do it" I'll check the parts stores tomorrow. If all else fails I will continue pounding on it, but maybe use a chisel or something that is a little wider than a screwdriver. Thanks guys. However, both types or rears do need to be turned while being compressed. but a 95 will have abs IV. p.s. the 94 calipers up ones also have to have the notches on the cylinder aligned perpendicular to the axis of the retaining bolts, or the parking brake will not function properly. ie when installed... the axis of the notches must be horizontal. kuwaitliberation Posted July 15, 2007 Report Share Posted July 15, 2007 I bought the stupid tool to retract the calipers. It is sooooo easy. Any auto parts store carries this tool. I change brake pads for a whole bunch of people. I also change the pads on mine at least every 2 years. It is so much cheaper to do that than to wait until the pads are worn out and you have a lot more to do. And thanks for reminding me. It is time to pull the calipers off and do some cleaning and lubrication. If you can't go, you can't go, but if you can't stop. It will be waaaay more costly.
