Puggsley456
Recently I have noticed that my idle was very high on my 3100 cutty. On start up it would run between 1200-2000rpm. And the check engine light would come on in park but turn off as soon as it was put into drive. Even when warm at a stop in drive it would stay at 1000rpm. The I also noticed that my car was starting to get warm, too warm. I figured it was due to the high idle. But today I come out of work to find a nice big puddle of antifreeze. And it apears to be coming from the water pump area, havent had time to check throughly yet. What do you guys think, IAC and water pump? We'll find out later today what the problem code was and I'll let you know.
Crazy K
here's what I figure. bad water pump could mean some air leaking into the system, and pocketing beneath the T-stat. My 93 was doing this do to a hose clamp that some @%$^#%&*$^#&)^#)%^#*%_!# forgot to put on the thottle body coolant line. I could not see it until I pulled the plenum. drove 10,000 miles with the clamp absent and kept seeing coolant dribble down the rear of the block. so... replace the waterpump first and see if the problems go away. slick
Yep, definately fix that coolant leak. Afterwards, if your still having a high idle issue, i'd start by checking all of your vacuum lines.
mgenin
Before you replace the water pump, you should make sure it is the water pump, which is not hard to do at all. You should see fluid beneath it, and on the serpentine belt. When my water pump went, it discharged a bunch of fluid every time the engine was shut off. So pop the hood, and shut the engine off when its warm, and you should see fluid come out the bottom. There is a bleeder hole there to release fluid when the pump seal goes bad. Regal_GS_1989
Is a water pump from a 2.8/3.1 the same as the one from a 3100? If so, i have one with maybe 100 miles on it lying around here doing dick all. You could have it for 30$. What area of the city are you from? Puggsley456
Ok, the water pump is fixed, it was only a $90 parts and labor job. Yay for working at a dealership Also had my codes scanned. The problem was with the electronic spark control. It was erased and idle went back to normal. I am thinking it may have to do with the air conditioning/idle increase. I noticed after I turned the air off tonight that the idle went up slightly(~1000rpm), We'll have to see if the problem persists tomorrow. rockfangd
check you coolant temp sensor too
ns87
check you coolant temp sensor too X2. Every so often I have that problem, its deffinately Coolant Temperature Sensor (not the one for the gauges). ALso try disconnecting your battery for a bit if the idle doesn't go down
timestalker45
i would do the same also replace ur sensor for the coolent level, i had a prob where one of my whoses blew and do to a loss in fluid and over heating it blew the sensor, which just for info if its the original sensor they dont take to kindly to not having fluid or it being to hot for any period of time mine when i pulled it was completely burned and the metol its self corroded. Puggsley456
I replaced the IAC, After I did I pulled the ecm fuses to reset the ecm. ANd everything was fine until today. I left the house this morning and put the air on in the car, turned it off about 5 minutes later and when I put the car in park at work, the idle went up to 12-1300rpm and shortly after the check engine light came on. When I turned the air back on the idle went back to normal and the light went out. I had it scanned and it is the A/C Pressure sensor circuit code. But what I dont understand is why would it go away when I turn the air on?
