chevygirl8
Hi all, I've been searching the posts and got some good info. I hope someone may be able to pin-point the problem with the following facts: 3.1 liter, Monte Carlo, 140,000 miles Had problems on accelateration. Injector cleaner helped, then a new fuel filter fixed the problem. I've had some motor oil sludge problems. I think small chunks plugging the push rods making noisy lifters. Happened when I started using Valvoline Maxlife. Switched. Rislone quickly fixes the problem as well as motor flushes (yes, I hate to use this) at oil change. All fine until the "service eng soon" light came on intermittently Engine performance was OK with the warning light on. Driving to autoparts store to get the code read and the car quit. It would fire, but not run well enought to stay running (even giving it gas when stuttering). After about an hour, the car started, it ran for about 3 minutes (enough for me to get it home - it quit a half mile short, coasted with a little pushing). A week later it ran a little rough, it would cut-out breifly when reving. Today a couple weeks later it runs great. 30 minutes air on, driving around the plat, very hot out today. I'm afraid to take it out of the neighborhood until I feel comfortable it will not die again. Injectors? - I'd have had to lose at least 4 at once to explain the rough engine O2 sensor? Can a bad one disable an engine? Fuel Pump? New fuel filter clogged again? I'm going to check on the fan problem I found on another post. Thanks for any help! slick
You should stop by a parts store and have the codes scanned. That will give you the most help. Napa, Autozone, etc.. should all do it for you for free.
19Cutlass94
napa will not scan codes for you. Find out what the SES light is telling you then well go from there. Until you have that code your shooting in a the dark. It would be a waste of money to try and fix it cause you would only be throwing parts at it not knowing the problem. chevygirl8
When I called the store they asked if the light was still on. If the light is no longer on can they read a past code? If I drop a $100 on a scanner myself, can I read the code history?
19Cutlass94
You can read a past code. And if you buy a scanner you would be able to look at all the codes its thrown and also clear those codes to see if anything comes back.
slick
Yep, as stated, you can read past codes. They are stored until deleted. Jay, I coulda sworn Napa would read codes?!?! Well, anyways, most any other auto parts store will read them for free for you.
19Cutlass94
Only places I know of that will read codes for free are autozone and advanced. napa wont, atleast none of the coporate stores will... But well let you scan codes if you buy a scanner
Crazy K
yeah, NAPA or AutoZone will. A code that lights the light will usually remain in the computer until it is read. I suggest getting the codes and posting what you find for us to pick and ponder. Oh yea, welcome to our site! where abouts are you located? Stevo
Belt Tensioner? Is it loping or losing power?
chevygirl8
Stevo, It just flat out won't run. Runs like 5-1/2 of Six cylinders are not firing It either runs great or won't run at all. No in between, no rhyme or reason.... yet. OH!!!!!!!, I did just fill the tank with gas 30 miles before this started happening. I'm going to get a code reader................................
