Tranny problem

My tranny on my 89SL with the 3.1 is giving me problems. What it is doing is when the car is cold it wont shift out of first gear but after it warms up the tranny shifts fine.I changed the tranny filter and fluid and it had no effect. There was no metal shavings in the pan so i dont know whats going out on the tranny. The tranny has been doing it for some time and all I have to do for the tranny to shift right is to let the car set and warm up before i pull out.Any one else had this problem or any suggestions on how to fix it.Thanks guys.

Nooooooooo....

Don't let them tell you to rebuild your tranny (you will get that answer on the repair shop). It will cost you $$$ and you will be better of buying another car if you have to rebuild the tranny.

More than likely it is your speed governor. It has dirt in it and sticking. Clean it up good and it should take about 3-4 hours.

The easy way is to remove your transmission fluid and then put a transmission flush (put the same number of quarts) and drive it for about 20-30 miles and then drain all the transmission fluid and then put a new transmission fluid and new gasket. This might be able to clean the speed governor without having to take the tranny apart (while the tranny is still in the car). If this does not solve the problem then it is time to open the tranny to clean the speed governor. You can do this while the tranny is still in the car.

If it were me, I would just let it warm up. I let my car warm up for like 2 or 3 minutes in the morning even in the summer. It doesnt like being cold. Anyway, thats what I would do

Perhaps even a vacuum problem or pluged / cracked valve body.

Try using some trans-x additive [or something equivalent] to see if it's nothing something clogged first.

Hopefully it's nothing major... best of luck!!!

yeah, thats a good idea. Last time I changed my tranny fluid, I used that Trans-X stuff. Its great. Yeah, try that stuff, its cheap and may work.

My car has never liked being cold. I dunno why, but it just doesnt. So, Im nice to it and let it warm up. Its not the tranny with me either, its both the motor and trans. Its not a problem at all with me, you just have to be nice to it.

When you take the old modulator check for any tranny fluid in it. If there was/is, then it is bad.

Well I put the new modulator valve on with no change on the problem.Something I have noticed is that when the tranny isnt wanting to shift the gas pedal isnt as hard to push its like a carb with a weak spring but when the tranny warms up and it starts shifting right the gas pedal doubles in the pressure it takes to push it.I still havent found out where the speed govenor is located if you guys know let me know. Thanks
