5speedz34
I'm doing this on my sisters car. She has an ION now. My plan is to use one of those engine braces across the top of the engine, drop the cradle replace the rack and the lines. I'm going to also inspect the engine mounts and replace as necessary, and I'm going to replace the coolant hose that always likes to leak on the passenger side wheel well. I might replace the ball joints too depending on how difficult they are to come out. POST UP!
Brian P
you don't necessarily HAVE to drop the subframe. I did to make it easier. Just drop the REAR of the subframe only (make sure to remove the steering shaft pinch bolt before you lower it). The line again is a PITA but can be done. Can you tilt the twin cam forward? BXX
What the hell happened to the ION to be needing all that right now... The most the car can be is 3 years old, right???
5speedz34
Sorry I figured this wouldn't be confusing. THIS IS ON A '94 GTP The ION has less than 500 miles on it lol. Brian, I think pulling the cradle is the best bet because of the lines, and the fact I can replace the engine mounts (which I have). Tilting the engine forward isn't going to happen. BXX
I'm doing this on my sisters car. She has an ION now. POST UP! re-read please Umm, did you buy your sister's old car.. Anyway, yeah, just back the front bolts out 3-5 turns and then remove the rear bolts and lower the rear of the cradle 3 inches...
5speedz34
Most people on here now my background. She got an ION, she didn't own the Grand Prix my parents did. I'm fixing it now. I live it at home, and I fix their cars.
White93z34
just FYI you are going to be hard pressed to replace that coolant line on the pass side without pulling the plenum.

joey b
You dont have to remove the subframe, just lower the rear. I would highly suggest 2 sets of metric wrenches, preferably one wratcheting as it will make removal from the subframe much easier. I also suggest buying outer tie rods and replacing those while at it. If you already plan to remove the plenum, then remove that before the car is 2 feet in the air and the engine dropped 6 inches. With the plenum removed it will also make replacing the lines much easier. I'd like to add that it is also a good call to replace the lines while doing this. You'll thank yourself for that.
