Panther15
ok today i drove my 90 lumina outa town to go get my door fixed at a friends house, i got up to speed but when i got to about 45 to 55 my tranny would started steppin in and out of gear and shake real hard and buck real hard into the gears. alittle after that started my engine started misfiring badly. most noticable at takeoff from a stop sign or light and when i got to about 37 mph it would starting misfiring bad and shaking along with the tranny issues stated above, The wierd thing about this is, it only does both when the engine warms up. If i shut it off for a few hours and it cools down it would run fine for about 10 minutes then go back to what it was doin before. If anyone has a idea of what could be the problem please help me out. if you need anymore info just let me know.
Dark Ride
Bad ICM or Coils maybe, it sounds to me like once it gets hot they start misfiring which is typical of a bad ICM, especially if you notice it at a certain speed or RPM. Panther15
thanks for the info man, me and my buddy thought exactly what you are thinking, with the areas that the problems start at. the icm thing is new idea to me but the coil idea is what we were thinking, thanks for the quick reply. ns87
I had a similar problem. It was a dying coil...but I replaced the ICM too Try the coils first. The only way I could get the furthest left coil was a bunch of extensions and going under the car as though I'm getting the oil filter! Panther15
thx for the headsup man, thats what i was thinkin of doin, was prolly just gonna replace all of them at once without the module then if it still runs bad i will replace the module aswell. i believe i need three coils if im not mistaken, autozone hasem for 27 a piece so around 85 bucks for 3, the icm is 103.
Dark Ride
ICM = Ignition Control Module The Coils bolt to the ICM and the ICM and tells the coils when to fire.
ns87
Yeah if you have the $$ deffinately just do all 3 at once. When my coilpack died, my car would misfire at idle...and under most acceleration only drive on 4 cyl. You can also unplug the wires from the packs one at a time to see if your idle changes. If it doesn't, unplug the wire from the second post and see if the pack fires at all. Oh yeah, also remove both the cooling fans. 4 bolts and they lift out. SO much more room! Dark Ride
Come to think of it, I believe that if you take your coil packs and ICM to a place like Autozone, I believe they can test them for you.
Panther15
i was thinkin they might be able to but would they be able to get to them to test them?
Crazy K
since it is a fail under hot condition... probably not. here's what I would do. get a spare spark plug wire... stick a screw driver in the end... lay the screw drivered end on top of the manifold, and plug the other end onto the point at each coil when after the car is hot and acting up. (make sure you move the plug wire only while the car is off and make sure the other 5 plugs are connected still) check for spark on all six coil points. you will most likely find one coil that is delivering no spark on both points. Panther15
i will check it out soon prolly this week i will go get the parts, anywyas i got another issue i wanna try and find a solution for. when i go to accelerate the car wants to bog down and not go, like something is forcing it to not wanna go lol. if i put the pedal to the floor it goes as if i barely push the pedal if that makes any since, the car kinda pulsates on acceleration. this car has got all sorts of issues but im tryin to keep it aslong as possible cuz its my first car and i only paid 500 bucks for it. Crazy K
that sounds like... something you should solve next. one problem at a time! do the spark test first. if during the runability issue you discover you have all coils working... we will have to look into it more.
