hey everyone,

question my lumina's a/c works perfect while moveing , but when stopped it sucks

its hot and very unplesent to even be in the car, vent temps go up to like 60 or 70 degrees f, when its below 90 degrees it cools fair and below 80 perfect.

i took it to my a/c guy here and he checked it out and said thats normal for this year car. the a/c has the correct levels of 134a and oil( justed serviced)

this car runs well get good mpg 26hwy , but with the a/c like this i want to dump it.

is there anything i can do to get this thing to cool while st the stop light?

thanks lee in bakersfield california

Have you checked to see if the radiator cooling fan (or fans) is on when the AC is on?

Sounds like you need another AC guy.

GM has a service bulletin that some w-body AC systems need more 134A than the service manual calls for.

Check the condensor- Make sure that it is free of leaves, bugs, etc.... Check your cooling fans as well. Does the one turn on when you turn your AC on?

I almost asked what the worlds tallest thermometer says today, but that is in Baker, not Bakersfield.

check for obstructions, and I think a bit of extra charging might help.

just to make sure you are not confusing a separate issue... the airflow is not reduced when you stop?

Ok, all, im needing help again this summer with my a/c, same problems same car,

a/c is terrible in stop and go traffic or sitting still, wonderful when moveing.

stop for a red light, almost instant crappy a/c, drive for 1000 feet cold wonderful a/c, so does anyone have any clue why this a/c is crappy?

the fans both work well, i checked and theres nothing blocking the

condencer( a/c radiator) , or the rad, the engine stays cool, dosent overheat .

please help, heat sucks....

Maybe this can help you. Last year I got sick of my A/C. It behaved the same way like yours. Its my 1992 Cutlass, which a friend converted and charged for me with the new stuff. BUT....everytime I stopped at a light or just sat idle for a short time the A/C SUCKED, like yours.I took it back to my friend and he checked it again and it was OK, he said and showed me.Some month later I had enough and bought myself a re-fill can with the meter to see the charge. It showed perfect charge, in the middle of the green. So, what the hell, I thought, I will put more in to the border of green to red. And you know what??? I have GOOD A/C now when I idle or stop somewhere.

ok ive thought about trying this, any dangers in doing this?

anyone else got another idea?

hell if i had the tools and equpiment id just retorfit this thing to R12, i know it world work nice then, but with the way this system is setup, the cycle switch would be all messed up probably......

Have your mechanic check the Idle of the car. even though your car feels like it idles smooth it can still be a little low. a/c compressors are designed for a minimum of 1100 rpms. if your car is below that or even right at that it will not compress the refrigerant and will cause poor cooling. if you can manualy bring up rpms with your gas pedal and it starts cooling better. this is probably your problem. remember when it comes to a/c compressors charge is critical.
