Oil Pump?!?

I'm replacing my oil pump with a M-95hv unit for a TGP, and can't get the pan off. I want to know who the hell designed the oil pan to be such a pain in the ass to get off. My cherokee wasn't half the bitch this is, and it's twice as long. Does anyone know the best way to get the oil pan off? I'd rather not drop the cradle, but it's looking like it's going to come to that. I have the "horse collar" support on the front of the engine loose, and I can almost get it out, but that's what's holding up the works. The pan is loose, but it won't come out.

I'm lifting it up by the lifting point on the passenger side in front of the alt. If I could get that damn horse collar out of there, I could drop the pan no problem, but right now i can't get it free. Anyone have a FAQ link or writeup or anything about replacing the oil pan. The FSM sucks, and I'd rather not drop the cradle right now because I can't tell which part of the steering linkage I have to disassemble. It looks like the connection from the rack to the steering column, but I can't get at it.

Anyway, enough ranting, any ideas/help is welcome.

Thanks,

Jon

Do you know what has to be disconnected as far at the rack is concerned? The manual says something about a steering gear pinch bolt?? It looks like its inside the car where the steering column connects to the rack, but it's impossible to get to.

it's not impossible to get to, trust me.. you have to reconnect it when swapping columns (and it sucked hardcore). I think you can also undo the engine bay side but that looks no easier.

I haven't had to deal with this specific issue, but the easiest thing to do may be to remove the heat shield from the rear of the rack (2 10mm I think) and unbolt the rack from the subframe entirely (2 15mm bolts I think). With a 282 you should have plenty of room to get in there. Just keep in mind that the lines and tie rods are still attached, make sure the lines don't bend too much

I do have lots of room back there. I'll probably end up dropping the cradle to clear the pan. I'm really salty about the way everything has to come apart to get at simple shit with these cars. Thanks for your help.

You want to talk about salty, try my nuts LOL LOL LOL LOL no seriosuly regarding salty... dont try doing a 1995-1999 Olds Aurora motor mount anytime soon if you dont like removing uncessary parts.

Every vehicle is going to have some stupid design where something so simple is a real pain to get off. If everything was easy to fix, everything would be breaking all the time.

I realize that you always have to pull other things off to get at what you want. I did the rear main seal in my Jeep last fall, and I basically had to pull the front axle to clear that oil pan (the inline 6 is a long motor with a lot of shit under it). And I would expect that, but to have to seperate the motor from the cradle seems silly. I don't have an engine hoist so I had to use a come-a-long from the rafters to support the engine. So I had to pull my hood off to change my oil pan   Just seems silly.

Eh... it's a price you pay I guess.

Not sure if you know this or not, but the alternator on a 3.4 DOHC is located behind the AC compressor on the bottom of the engine. To me, it seems silly to have to drop the cradle and pop out the outer tie rod to get to be able to squeeze it out, but it has to be done.
