CSI_MuNkY
Yeah Yeah, ANOTHER AC thread.... SORRY! The AC in my GP hasn't worked since the day I bought it (2 years ago this september). Recently I read about how the compressor works, what with the clutch inside to engage and disengage the pully. When turned on the clutch its supposed to activate the compressor. I'm assuming this should bog down the engine slightly, but it doesn't in my car. Does that mean I need a new compressor? Also, how do I check to see if I need to recharge the system? After buying all my suspension goodies, money is pretty tight, so if I get my AC working again it will have to be without taking it to a shop. slick
You can actually visually see if the clutch is engaging or disengaging. Are you sure that your system just isn't low on refrigerant?
CSI_MuNkY
Are you sure that your system just isn't low on refrigerant? Where would i be able to see this clutch engaging? Yeah, no idea how to check that either Jamie
slick
Have someone sit in the vehicle, with the AC off. Look down at the AC compressor. Then tell them to turn it on, you should be able to see some movement once the AC is switched on. You will need a pressure guage to measure the amount of refrigerant in the system. You can get them at any parts store. Your low side fitting is under your airbox.
CSI_MuNkY
awesome, sounds simple enough, I'll start with that... I'll get the gf to help when she gets home from work Thanks! Jamie
slick
Not a problem. You should also be able to check to see if it is getting voltage, you can use a DMM to measure this. Just keep in mind, it may not have any voltage sent to the compressor if there is low refrigerant in the system.
1990lumina
To be honest you'll probably hear the compressor engage if it engages at all. When you hit A/C my Lumina always made a "thunk!" and then was quiet after that. I'm gonna guess there is a leak in the system and it's low on refrigerant..you could try putting new stuff in yourself with those bottles from C-Tire but there's a chance it'll all just leak out if there is a problem with your system. I dunno if W's have a seperate fuse for the AC?? My RX-7 does and it popped once, might check that too..though I really dunno if there even is a fuse for it or not! slick
Yep, seperate fuses and relay for the fan. You should be able to hear the compressor turn on. Also, the fan should turn on if the ac is turned on. If neither is happening, check the pressure in the system.
J
If your system if low on coolant the clutch WON'T engage at all. If your A/C isn't working at all for the past 2 years you might also have to take the clutch and bearing off and get a new one ($90) install is a bitch though. It involves dropping the subframe in front and a borrowed puller that i would never have known existed.
1990lumina
Does your compressor cycle when the "DEFROST" is on?? I know mine does..it removes mositure from the interior somehow..but when it's cycling with defrost is that the same as air conditioning?
